407.0. "MATURE VS. IMMATURE" by WBC::DONAHUE () Wed Jul 19 1989 13:43

    				< ALEXIS >

Does anyone like the name ALEXIS? Does this name sound too genteel?
I think the name sounds sophisticated for a "grown-up name. On the
otherhand, Alexis sounds too mature for a baby's name. How does one get
    around this???

I like Alexis, and don't think it sounds too mature. One
thing you might want to consider, though, is associations.
Isn't this a popular name for those night-time soaps? It
also sounds a wee bit affected to me.

I like Alexis too. One thing, you could call her Lexi once in awhile
    - that sounds cute. Though remember to call her Alexis often enough.
It just does't make sense to ignore the real name all the time.

I knew a girl when I was 13 with the name Alexis. That was way
before the Dynasty soap. So I wouldn't worry about the comparision.
There's always someone - somewhere on TV with the same . Besides,
I think the tv person spells her name Elexis. ?

    RE: Note 407.2

I like the nickname Lexi. This name seems appropriate for a child's
name. I agree, I would have to call her Alexis pretty often. Thanks
for that piece of advise. The only nickname I concluded was Alex.
It sound too "boyish." You are right about someone on TV always having
    the same name.

    Thanks!

    RE: Note 407.1

You are right in the sense that one should consider associations. When
you think of the character Alexis on Dynasty, the name tends to become
malevolent, like the character she plays. I just received a reply.
This person suggested to call Alexis - Lexi. That sounds rather cute
for a child's nickname. Of course, I would like her to grow up being
called Alexis. I'll have to take your reply into consideration.

    Thanks for your repsonse,

Alexis is a beautiful name! Don't worry about the TV show. By
the time the kid grows up it will be forgotten. The show's been
cancelled. Lexi is cute. But Alex is nice too. I knew a few girls
named Alex when I was growing up and never thought of it as being
too masculine. Besides when she gets old enough she will decide
what form of her name she wants to be called. All the Alex's I
knew were very pretty, sexy, feminine. Lexi is so yuppish, like
    Buffy, Binky, etc.

This note reminds me of when my eldest daughter first started 4
yr old kindergarten. When asked who her friends were at school,
she would always respond Waxy. We puzzled for months over who
waxy was ... we tried other sound alikes. Finally mothers met and
the penny dropped. Our daughter ahd trouble pronouncing l's and
    so Lexi became Waxy!

My parents had this same type of problem when my sister was born,
but the other way around. They wanted to name her Mandy, but thought
that was too cute of a name to have when she was older. So, they
named her Amanda with the nickname of Mandy. She has grown up with
both names being used frequently. Whenever she has to formally
sign something, it is always Amanda. I have also noticed now that
she is older (17) she refers to herself moreoften as Amanda.

I love the name Alexis, but be sure that you have some nickname
for a little girl. Lexi was the first nickname that I thought of.
I like the idea of having the option of what to be called. I like
my name, but I never really had a nickname except El.

A close friend just named her daughter Alexis and calls her Ally
like Allie Sheedy of the movies. I know people may think "Alley"
but I never have associated Ally with anything but this beautiful
    little girl.

My daughter's name is Allyson and we call her Ally. I prefer
the spelling "Alison", but I don't like Ali (I think of Mohammed
Ali as opposed to Ali McGraw) and I don't like Allie (as in Kate
and Allie) but I like Ally (as in Ally Sheedy). Funny, I never
heard of it used as a nickname for Alexis. Interesting...
