I'm already planning ahead to my next child. If it is a boy my husband has picked the name of Travis Devin. I'm not exactly crazy about this but our deal was I pick the girl and he picks the boy but we have to both agree. Anyway the first was a girl and I got my choice (Rachel Elizabeth). Now for my next choice, I am kind of partial to the name Savanna. Actually she was an extremely likable character in a book. Savanna Suzanne is kind of nice but I would appreciate some suggestions. Please keep in mind the last name is Lilly. Thanks, Cindy

How about Georgia? Seriously, though, Savanna is a rather pretty name, but it already does have some associations. Though a lot of female names are derived from place names Geneva, Florence, etc.), you have to make sure that either the personal name is strongly established in its own right, or that there are no negative associations with the place itself. You wouldn't, for example, want to call your girl "Abilene" or "Utica." Actually, I think Savanna might pass this test -- I'm beginning to like it. Some other things to consider, though ... Savanna has another association -- i.e., a swampy grassland. Also, the combination with Lilly might be particularly unfortunate. Perhaps some botanists out there might be able to tell us if there are any species of lilly that grow only in swampy grassland -- and, thus, go by the name of "savanna lilly." -- Cliff | |||||
