name (Lord only knows why).
I did however, ask my mother what kind of drugs she was on
at the time she chose it. Didn't she ever figure I'd have
a blind date some day, and the guy would say, "I'm going
out with a Mona? I can just imagine......"

| Re. Agatha or "Aggie"
When I was little (about 6) , my mother and aunt used to tease me
about my love for wierd clothes and jewelry. They told me my mother
was a gypsy that lived down the Cape named Finula Penuche and
that she left me in a basket on the doorstep. They also told me
that my real name was Aggie Finula Penuche, but they just called
me Stacie for now until my mother came back to get me.
Whenever they were together, they used to tease me and say they
had to start calling me Aggie again so that I'd be used to it.
I'd get SO upset.

| I agree with Fanny, Ethel and *Gertrude* (Gertie!), one of my all-time
least favorite names for a girl (how did I forget it on my list!)
I also remembered:
Hattie
Etta
Eunice
Brunhilde (that's getting really bad, by American ideas of names
anyway)
Creepy First Names for Men to have:
Ichabod
Ebenezer
Floyd
Clyde
Dwayne
Irving
Rudolph
Reuben
Roland
Harold
Henry
Herman
Hubert
Chester (I *hate* this name!)
Walter ( ditto)
Gus
Felix
Wilbur
Adolf (I read once that since Hitler it was determined on some
survey to be the most hated first name for a man in the
world) :-)
Leroy
In regard to the name Mona:
If I had never known a certain person by this name I would probably
associate it with the Mona Lisa, and wouldn't think it was too bad
for a name. But, unfortunately, there was a particularly *nasty*
little girl in my grade school named Mona. She was the only Mona
I knew for years and the name always makes me think of her. She
was the type of kid who makes fun of other kids clothes or fat kids
or unpopular kids, and starts fights and starts rumors and an all
around rotten person by the time she was 8 yrs. old!!! Associations
like that can sometimes ruin names for people. :-)

it or not, it is my mother's favorite name. Thank goodness my father
had sense enough to not let her name me Agatha. All I can think
of are cows (my brother had a cow named Aggie).

be there. )

THE PURPOSE OF THIS TOPIC (331) WAS FOR PEOPLE TO INDICATE
NAMES THAT THEY DID NOT LIKE PERSONALLY. SO, WHAT YOU MAY LIKE
AND WHAT I LIKE MAY BE DIFFERENT. IN FACT, I BET THERE IS AN ETHEL,
BEATRICE, ETC OUT THERE IN DIGITAL THAT WILL DEFEND THEIR NAME AS
BEING NICE.
LET'S NOT CRITICIZE OTHER PEOPLE'S LIST.

that would seem ludicrous to Americans may be very common. But,
I do think that Jesus is an unfortunate choice in a first name.

o Girls -- Mercedes, Portia ... couldn't think of any
other car names. I'm also very partial to Dorchas

name
o Boys -- anything along the lines of Hilary, Leslie,
Beverly, Shirley (all of which started out as male

My mother worked in an office area. Whenever a call came in, she

person who worked there was a Mrs. Rass.
Her first name...
... Ophelia.
Another name I am not overly fond of is my father-in-law's name.

| My aunt's name is 'Beulah' and when she asked her mother why, it seems
she was named after a favorite hymn, 'Living in Beulah Land.' After
knowing that it wasn't so bad.
An English teacher I had in school was named 'Norma' after her father's
love of opera. But when she was being baptized, the priest wouldn't
accept it because it was a 'pagan' name. She was baptized something
else (can't remember) but was always called 'Norma.' She was a lovely
person so I've always loved that name.
