242.0. "Samantha" by PULSAR::BURDEN () Wed Jun 15 1988 14:27

As a follow up to the last note, if it's a girl, she'll be named
Samantha Yvonne. We both like Samantha and Yvonne is a family name
from my wife's side. Any history on Samantha? Somewhere in this
conference it was mentioned that it had Latin or Italian roots,
    any more information?

    I love the name Samantha!

It's definitely a glamour name, maybe because all the Samanthas
    I know have been glamourous.

I also like "Sam" as a nickname for a girl

My baby is due in November and Samantha is the first girls name
I picked. That is, until a friend who works in Admitting of a
local hospital told me it has become one of the most common names
this year. I think I've settled on Danielle Nicole, though someone
    said it was too heavy.

Sorry Carol, but Mick and I have Danielle picked too and I'm hoping
for another girl. Mick liked Samantha too. Are you sure the guys
haven't been talking? I was thinking of Danielle Elizabeth how about
that? Our problem is going to be with a boys name.

Our daughter was born on January 11, 1988 and we named her Samantha
Ann. Her nickname is Sam and her initials spell "SAM". The name
was the only girls name that my husband and I agreed on. We decided
that every Samantha we had ever met or seen on TV was beautiful...and
of course our daughter is too! Another reason I liked the name
Samantha was because of Samantha Smith, the little girl from New
Hampshire or Maine who was the Goodwill Ambassador who wrote to
Mikhail Gorbachev about world peace and was invited to Russia for
a visit. I always admired her. Anyway...I have a historical writeup
on the name if anyone is interested, let me know and I'll send it
    out over the notes file.

I recommend the name Samantha...if she's anything like our daughter,
she will be a joy to have around.

    Dear Dave,

I dont know to much about the history but I think Samantha is
a beautiful name, and I dont think it matter to much on where a
name came from as long as you like it!

    Best of luck,
    Louisa & Alicia

Reg: 242.4 I would like to know the history of Samantha. That is my
daughters name. Samantha Joan Fadden. When I had her I had 5 different
girls name picked out. When I was looking thru name books Samantha was
the first I picked out, my husband wasn't to thrilled but of course
when she was born we both took one look at her and said Samantha fits.

My original idea with the middle name (Joan) was to nickname her
Sammy-Jo but it just doesn't fit her and also it is my mother-in-laws
name, I did want her middle name a name from someone in the family so
it turned out fine. After reading that story about that little girl
I like it even more. I am so glad I picked that name and of course
I couldn't imagine her with a different name.

Just browsing through I noticed this. My name is Samantha Smith (well,
my married name anyway!). I was christened Samantha Louise Stockwell.
When I was small I was called Sammy and now I'm always called Sam.

I'm now nearly four months pregnant and my husband and I are having
great difficulty thinking of any names for our child!
