202.0. "Hilary" by KAOFS::S_BROOK (Many hands make bytes work) Tue Apr 05 1988 10:26

Someone asked in my note about Rowena, for information about my
    three year old daughter's name

    Hilary

It's not really Old English in derivation ... the story goes that
it is from the Latin name Hilarius, a 4th century saint. It was
then used in Britain up until the 17th century as a male name,
although a feminine form Hilaria has been found as early as the
    5th century.

A male form was also used in France as Hilaire

It faded from use until the 1870's or so when it re-appeared as
    a female name also.

The meaning is almost as it sounds .... Happy one

And apart from a wicked 3 year old's temper, the name suits my daughter
    very well!!!

Re .0, I wonder if my ex-husband's ancestors were named after Hilarius,
the 4th century saint? Our last name is St.Hilaire. When my daughter
was born I briefly thought of naming her Hilary St.Hilaire, but
then decided it would be too weird, and might influence her to become
a mass murderer or something awful (like Sirhan Sirhan).

This is the same root from which we get "hilarious."
Also, there once was a feminine form" "Hilaria."

202.3Middle name???ANGLIN::RECEPTIONMFri May 29 1992 13:199
I am planning on naming my first baby girl Hilary. I need help with
coming up with a middle name. I have tried Hilary Jean, but I know too
many people with the middle name Jean. Hilary Louise sounds okay, but
    I'd really appreciate some input.

    Thank you in advance.
