| Rowena is the heroine of Walter Scott's Ivanhoe. Elizabeth Taylor
played the part in the movie. It is a beautiful name! The other
female character in the novel was Rebecca.

| I had a great-grandmother who named her children after characters
in whichever book she was reading at the time of their births.
Ultimately I had a great aunt named Rowena - guess what my grandmother
was reading at the time! Anyway, even as a child I liked her
name as it created images of knights and lovely ladies. And now
--- I still think it is beautiful.

| Hi!
I have a name that I have not noticed in this notes file -- Sharon.
It is a hebrew name meaning rose or princess (depends on who's book
you read). Also, my middle name is Dana -- another I haven't seen
here.
I am expecting my first child in October, but being one of those
annoying people who cannot wait to complete things, we have already
decided on the names.
Girl -- Sarah Elayne
Boy -- Daniel Isaac
With a last name like FIEKOWSKY we have to be careful (my husband
went through High School being called Freakoutsky). We didn't want
the baby to have to worry about their first name, too.
I noticed that someone said that Sarah has gotten very popular,
but I haven't heard it for someone under 30 lately (since I teach
Sunday School, I'm usually on top of the Jewish name trends), but
I did have a Meghan Cohen (no joke) in one of my classes.
My husband is Peter Joseph -- Peter is a name I haven't heard for
a child in a while.
Any feedback on these names would be appreciated; like I said, we
have plenty of time to change our minds!

| Re Rowena, about 18 yrs. ago I worked in a office with an older
woman (I was very young then!) who was named Rowena. I thought
it was very pretty and different. She's the only real person -
outside of Ivanhoe - that I've ever met with the name. I don't
remember anybody calling her Weenie :-) !
I agree people have to be careful about unpleasant nicknames but
I'd go for Rowena if I were you. I think Weenie is too farfetched
to worry about.

| Hi,
I hope it's not too late to reply, but I think Rowena is a beautiful
name. I love Old English names because they are so unusual. Is
Hilary an Old English name? I was looking at the name Rhiannon
which is also O.E. It is first used in the Welsh tale The Mabinogion.

| I also love the name Rhiannon! I wanted to someday name my daughter
that but everyone scrunched up their noses...(I wouldn't care but
my husband was one of them!)

| Well, we did in fact have a little girl (we didn't know beforehand)!
Rowena was born Monday April 11, all safe and sound!
We decided to go ahead with Rowena, but are now puzzling over middle
names ... both our other girls have 2 middle names and so we feel
that Rowena should as well. None of the names we have chosen for
the girls have been used in the family in recent memory and wish
to do the same for Rowena.
Our eldest is Jennifer Teresa Frances, the next is Hilary Megan
Elise.
We have found one middle name we like ... Merion ... a sort of cross
between Meredith (a mouthful) and Marion (a variant on Mary ...
a well used family base name) ... so we have ...
Rowena ??? Merion Brook ... or ... Rowena Merion ??? Brook
We are generally not keen on "trendy" "in" names. (Jennifer was
not particularly popular in England where we originally chose it
however when we got to Canada we found Jennifers everywhere but
liked the name enough not to change our minds.)
Anyone have any ideas ?
thanks, stuart

| My wife and I finally managed to come up with something we both
were relatively happy with:
Rowena Fiona Merion
Fiona means "fair one"
Now down to parenting her!
