Can anybody tell me how this name is supposed to be pronounced? Is it a one syllable name or is it a 2 syllable name (sort of rhyming with Chloe)? I like the way it looks written but am not sure how it's pronounced! Lorna

I went to school with a girl name Zoe (she pronounced it like Chloe). I think it has a Russian background. --Lisa

I'm a little late but... According to a book I have, Zoe is a Greek name and should be pronounced ZO-ee. I love the name! I did a teaching practice in England when I was in college and we had a little girl in the class with the name. I also helped a good friend of mine come up with a name for his female kitten. You guessed it... Zoe! Lesa

This is a year late, but I couldn't resist. My name is Zoe. I always pronounced it like Joe, only with a Z. I think it is a matter of preference of the parents on how it is pronounced, but originally it is a Greek name meaning "Life." In Greek it is pronouced Zo-ee, but you need to spell it with two little dots (like a German umlaut) over the "o". When I was born 30 years ago, this name was very unusual, and I loved growing up with a name that was different. It is becoming very popular now, though. By the way, it is also the Hebrew word for "this". |
