136.0. "Names based on heritage" by 39682::MANDALINCI () Wed Sep 30 1987 16:18
How are people reacting to unique or different names these days?
We are expecting our first in March and, since my husband is
originally from Turkey, we have decided that it is extremely
important for the children not forget their heritage, especially
when the rest of his family is still in Turkey and we do vacation
there. My step-children's names are Ali (as in Mohammad ALI) and
Sibel (pronounced C-Bell, not Cybil). We are currently looking
at Ayse (pronounced Eye-Sha) for a girl and cannot agree on a boys
name. Do you know how difficult it is to find a name the people
can pronounce, never mind understand?!?!? In my family we don't
have any "common-place" names like Mary or John. We all have vastly
differnt names, like Julia, Stephanie, Shannon, Kimberly, Pamela
or Andrea for the girls and the boys are Andrew, Francis, Edward,
Christopher, Michael (not Mike), etc. I feel people are trying
not to use simple names but return to unique or uncommon (not
unheard of) names. Just an observation.
