My book says it is from Latin meaning little and womanly. It
also says it is a modern familiar form of Carol, a feminine
    form of Carl; Charles.

         Hello,

My name is Carolyn. My brother bought me a mug for
Christmas a few years ago, with my name on it, and it
         says that Carolyn means melody.

By the way, the "lyn" part of my name is pronounced like
         the instrument "Violin", not "line".

I get bit fed up when people say Caroline instead of
Carolyn. So I shorted my name of Cally. The only
problem with this is that some people cally me Kelly.

They just can't seem to get it right.

I love my name as I believe that it is quite unusual as
I do not know many people with the same name as me.

         Regards

         Cally.....Carolyn

In my family, my grandmother named Caroline
                  a first cousin named Carolyn
    		  a niece named Caroline

I like both names, but always make certain that they are pronounced
    properly.
