96.0. "An 'N' for a boy?" by REGENT::EPSTEIN (Bruce Epstein) Thu May 14 1987 21:02

    Following the Jewish tradition, my wife and I will be naming
    our children using the first letters of the names of recently
    deceased relatives. The letters we have to use are "E" (for
    her mother) and "N" (for my grandfather). The E names are
    no problem, we like Erick and Ericka (yes, with an "extra"
    'k'). N for a girl will be Nicole. However, we have not
    been able to find an N for a boy that we like. Anybody
    have any suggestions? We have already discarded:

    Nicholas
    Neal/Neil
    Ned
    Norman
    Niles
    and all the others in our books.

    Thanks; the baby is due in September.

    My wife is now leaning toward 'Niall' (pronounced 'Nile') for
    a boy's name. We find it in only one book, as a variant of Neil.
    Anyone have any more information?

    Bruce
96.6Njal, a possible variantBOOKLT::HALVORSONJane HalvorsonWed Aug 12 1987 09:1610

	I'm unfamiliar with Niall, but the Icelandic form of Neil is
Njal. Njal's Saga (available as a Penguin paperback) is one of the
most famous Old Icelandic sagas -- a wonderful tale wherein the
Norse notions of fate and vengeance coexist with Christian beliefs. Njal,
the title character, is wise, well-respected, and gifted (or cursed)
with prescience.

    Ericka was born at 5:04 PM (EDT), so you were probably on the dance
    floor by that time :-)
