77.0. "ITALIAN NAME TRADITIONS" by 36903::SARANITA () Fri Jan 23 1987 12:30

Anyone out there keep the Italian tradition of reversing the
first two names in the eldest male of each generation? My
family does, and I know of two other families that do...

ie. my grandfather - Charles Salvatore Saranita (Charlie)
my Dad - Salvatore Charles Saranita (Sam)
my Brother - Charles Salvatore Saranita (Chuck & Charlie)

of course, my bother will now (someday) have a son and name him
    Salvatore....... .

Another Italian family I know of does it with Joseph Paul/Paul Joseph.

I think traditions like this are important. Americans don't take
pride in the family names as the old country did, mostly because
immigrants wanted their sir names to sound more "American" to fit
it. Italians are known for their pride, as are the Irish (my other
half, my mom's maiden name is Mannion). So, coming from such
a proud family, I'm very reluctant to give up my name....but
come October, It changes from Saranita to Kobilarcsik.

One good thing, his family is just as proud of their name as I am
    of mine!

This is an old note but...

In my husbands family they do something similar.

    Pop is Joseph David.
    Dad is Carl David.
    Husband is David Andrew.
We plan on naming our son Christopher David.

I think great-grandfather also had David in his name.

Holds true in my family too...

    Grandpa - Philip Joseph
    Dad - Joseph Philip
Brother - Steven Philip (my Mom isn't Italian and didn't like Philip
as a first name, but agreed to it as a middle name).

Friends of ours also followed the tradition. Actually, as the
tradition was explained to me, the eldest born son gets named after
    the paternal grandfather.
