When we had our first child we had more or less decided the childs name depending on the sex. If it was a boy we would have called it after my father, if it had been a girl after one of my wifes sisters. Well the story started on 18th February 1984. Eleina Maria was born. We wanted to register her with the Spanish embassy in Ireland. I went there and the girl who I knew well told me my daughters name was (Elena, Helena etc). I said bad and all as my Spanish was that I knew what my daughters name was. The girl in the Spanish embassy in Dublin, Ireland said that it was not a registered name and so the story began. I rang my sister-in-law to ask her to forward her birth certificate so that I could prove to the Spanish embassy that it was a recognised Spanish name. I eventually registered her with the Spanish embassy. She has Irish and Spanish nationality. Now at 2 1/2 years of age everybody thinks her name is Elena, Helena etc because it is a rare Spanish name so everybody has difficulty with it. Even my sister-in-law in Spain has problems because people in general don't know this name. Rene Aungier (Ferney-Voltaire, France)

Bad look Rene. In the past, here in Spain, was a big problem, but at present, just if you contact to a very old people (at less with old brain) you have problems. My fisth daughter name is 'Libertad` (Liberty, of course) and the day when I went to the register, I carry with me a newspaper with a note of a trial about a father who try to use this name to your daughter... When the transaction was (sucessfully) finished, I ask about the law and this trial... The (young) lady in the office just said: 'If you like this name, is your problem`!!! That's the normal situation today. Best regards, saludos, aurevoire... Flix Ballesteros Rivas. | |||||

Good heavens! What a horror story! I think I'll organize a group of protesters to march on the registration office: Moon Unit and Dweezil Zappa, Chastity Bono, World B. Free, Prince ... I understand in the Soviet Union some children are named Tractor. |
