| Do you pronounce Ian, Euhn or Iuhn? I've heard it both ways and
have actually had people correct me..."NO! It's pronounced IIIan!"
Just curious...

| We pronounce it EE-UHN. I haven't heard the "long-I" pronunciation
much -- I suspect it's more prevalent in the UK. There's always
someone who will tell you they know better!!

| Ive never heard of "III-uhn" in the UK. Incidentally another spelling
is 'Iain' which is even more Sottish. My Scottish grandfather was
pleased to hear I'd been called Ian, but then disappointed to hear
that it was spelt 'Ian' and not 'Iain'.

Stuart is a surname and a tartan.

| My sister had her first boy almost three years ago to date. She
named him Ian Scott, which I thought was rather appropriate, since
it seems to be the consensus that Ian is a Scottish name!!

| I LOVE the name Ian and would very much like to give that name to
my baby (provided it's a boy, of course) but my husband is resisting.
So far, every single boy's name I've come up with he's rejected.
To top it all off, he has no suggestions. Fortunately I've got
til mid October, but I still don't think that's enough time to
convince him that Ian MacDonald is a great name.

| re:-1
I too love the name Ian, but I was going to spell it Iain. I am
expecting early December. My husband is rejecting all the boys
names I come up with too! I keep picking Gaelic names and he says
they all sound feminine. I'll keep trying.....Jo

29.9 | IT'S NOT JOHN, JOHN, IT'S IAN! | CSC32::IRISH | | Wed Apr 18 1990 14:05 | 9 |
| My son's name is also Ian - Ian Jonathan Irish to be exact - talk about
a Gaelic name. Only mistake we made was to give him my father's name
as a middle name - Jonathan - thus giving my in-laws the open to call
him "John-John".
It's a wonderful name and fits him perfectly!

29.10 | In keeping with Ian | NYEM1::REIS | | Fri May 17 1991 13:07 | 4 |
| My sisters name was Shawn, she married a John, they named their first
born son John, and to keep with the John theme named their daughter
Giovan. Too bad none of us thought of Ian when they had their second
son. He ended up a William... but what a beautiful William!

29.11 | Late thoughts on the name | WELCLU::KINGI | Ian King | Wed Feb 03 1993 08:34 | 21 |
| A bit late adding to this note, but some first hand knowledge of the
name
Ian is Scottish, but it also used in Ireland.
Other spellings of the name are Eonn or Iann,
I have been called E. before now, so the name can be shortened if you
try.
The only pronounciation I agree with is E.N. as in the two letters said
as they would be in the alphabet. Although some non-English speaking
country's people have tended to call me "Iron" as in the metal.
Ian doesn't sound feminine to me!!!
Regards,
Ian.
