29.0. "IAN" by BAGELS::BLIZARD () Wed Jul 30 1986 16:02

    We wanted to give our son Ian a name that had been in his family.
    His two paternal great-grandparents were John and Matthew, and we
    liked both those names. However, everyone today seems to be named
    Matthew, so we made that his middle name. Since there are too many
    "Johns" in the family already, we chose the Scots form, Ian, since
    that is where his great-grandfather originated.

    Also, Ian is difficult (I've learned not to say impossible) to
    shorten; we didn't want a nickname.

    The only problem we've had with "Ian Matthew" is here in Massachusetts.
    When he was a hairless baby, and you couldn't tell whether he was
    a girl or boy, people insisted on calling him "Ann", since that's
    how they were hearing "Ian". But now that he's a big boy of 3, that
    problem has gone away.

29.1How's it pronounced?8555::LEVETTif you knew sushi like I know sushiThu Jul 31 1986 14:306
    Do you pronounce Ian, Euhn or Iuhn? I've heard it both ways and
    have actually had people correct me..."NO! It's pronounced IIIan!"

    Just curious...

29.2Well, we say...BAGELS::BLIZARDTue Aug 05 1986 08:416
    We pronounce it EE-UHN. I haven't heard the "long-I" pronunciation
    much -- I suspect it's more prevalent in the UK. There's always
    someone who will tell you they know better!!

    Ive never heard of "III-uhn" in the UK. Incidentally another spelling
    is 'Iain' which is even more Sottish. My Scottish grandfather was
    pleased to hear I'd been called Ian, but then disappointed to hear
    that it was spelt 'Ian' and not 'Iain'.

     Another Scottish christian name which we English misspell is Stewart.
    Stuart is a surname and a tartan.

    My sister had her first boy almost three years ago to date. She
    named him Ian Scott, which I thought was rather appropriate, since
    it seems to be the consensus that Ian is a Scottish name!!

29.7Another vote for IanCLOVE::MACDONALD_KWed May 03 1989 15:359
    I LOVE the name Ian and would very much like to give that name to
    my baby (provided it's a boy, of course) but my husband is resisting.
    So far, every single boy's name I've come up with he's rejected.
    To top it all off, he has no suggestions. Fortunately I've got
    til mid October, but I still don't think that's enough time to
    convince him that Ian MacDonald is a great name.

    re:-1

    I too love the name Ian, but I was going to spell it Iain. I am
    expecting early December. My husband is rejecting all the boys
    names I come up with too! I keep picking Gaelic names and he says
    they all sound feminine. I'll keep trying.....Jo
29.9IT'S NOT JOHN, JOHN, IT'S IAN!CSC32::IRISHWed Apr 18 1990 14:059
    My son's name is also Ian - Ian Jonathan Irish to be exact - talk about
    a Gaelic name. Only mistake we made was to give him my father's name
    as a middle name - Jonathan - thus giving my in-laws the open to call
    him "John-John".

    It's a wonderful name and fits him perfectly!

29.10In keeping with IanNYEM1::REISFri May 17 1991 13:074
    My sisters name was Shawn, she married a John, they named their first
    born son John, and to keep with the John theme named their daughter
    Giovan. Too bad none of us thought of Ian when they had their second
    son. He ended up a William... but what a beautiful William!
29.11Late thoughts on the nameWELCLU::KINGIIan KingWed Feb 03 1993 08:3421
    A bit late adding to this note, but some first hand knowledge of the
    name

    Ian is Scottish, but it also used in Ireland.

    Other spellings of the name are Eonn or Iann,

    I have been called E. before now, so the name can be shortened if you
    try.

    The only pronounciation I agree with is E.N. as in the two letters said
    as they would be in the alphabet. Although some non-English speaking
    country's people have tended to call me "Iron" as in the metal.

    Ian doesn't sound feminine to me!!!

    Regards,

    Ian.
