25.0. "ROBYN" by 3143::PHILBROOK (Chico's Daddy) Fri Jul 25 1986 16:15

My sister's name is Robyn Lyn. I seldom see the name spelled with
a "y". Isn't the version spelled with an "i" a male version of
the name? I also seldom see Lyn spelled this way - it's normally
"Lynne". (My mother liked short middle names, mine is Paul, my
other sister's is Lee).

Anyone know what Robyn means?

Robin is a diminutive of Robert, analyzed in a previous note. It
means "Bright fame."

Or of Roberta, with the same meaning.

Yes, ROBYN is the female version of Robin, which in itself
is a derivative of Robert.
The name LYN spelt this way is, in Wales at least, a male
name. (Anyone remember the longjumper Lyn Davies, Olympic Gold
Medal winner, Tokyo 1968 ... set a world record at the time of
27 feet and something or other.)

By the way, I'm not Welsh, but English with global interests!

But Robin (with an i) is not necessarily only a male name. In fact,
I only personally know of women (or girls) with the name Robin.

Having lived with the name for 35 years now, I can say I've always
been happy with it. People do sometimes try to spell it Robyn,
which I always felt was silly, kinda too frilly or something. When
I was a child I did occasionally have trouble with it. I was once
asked to join the Boy Scouts, which would probably have caused a
stir back then! I think part of the reason for that was my middle
name, which is Gale. That is really the male spelling. I always
wished my mother had spelled it Gail which I like better. She
always teased me about it being a big wind. I never appreciated
that. I do know one male named Robin too, by the way.

25.6When I was just a child...NCMWVX::WARRENSFri Sep 12 1986 23:3913
When I was a kid, one summer I won a city-wide torunament for
something.
I was interviewed for the local rag, and was asked my name and
spelling. I was into different names then so I said that my name
was Robin Warrens. It got printed that way.

When my parents read it in the paper (with no prompting from me
- a slightly sheepish child) they said the paper spelled my name
incoorectly. I had to tell them that that was my name now.

They REALLY didn't like that. I wasn't Robin long.

My sister's name is Robin Rose.....Definitly a girl's name. And
guess what, she has red hair too!

25.8Another Robyn, another GaleMSD36::STHILAIRE1 step up & 2 steps backWed Mar 02 1988 08:105
My daughter's two best friends since kindergarten are twin sisters
named Robyn and Liegh (both spelled just that way).

Re .5, one of my cousin's name is Gale and she's female.

25.9Robin is a mans name (traditionally)WLDWST::GRIBBENThu Jul 07 1988 16:418
My name is Robin also....But I spell mine Robbin...I am a woman,my
father is Irish and my mother and myself are Canadian. And when
I went back home (Ireland) for a visit and was asked my name...They
would all laugh Because Robin is traditionally a mans name....I
love my name...And by my parents spelling it with two "b's" makes
it very unique....
