23.0. "Michael" by 15825::TIMMONS () Tue Jul 22 1986 07:42

Michael is my son's name. It sounds strong and sturdy, and he is.

I was saddled with Leroy, (Lee), and didn't want any son of mine
to have to go through the ribbing I took when growing-up.

He is our first-born. We decided to have both a boys and girls
name selected, although I was sure it would be a boy. As we went
over boys names, I reflected back on all of the people I had known
and what their names were. In the end, I couldn't remember any
Michael, or Mike, for that matter, that was wimpy. I have always
believed that a person's name could have an influence on his
personality, depending on how other's perceived the name. So,
    Michael it was.

While most people call him Mike (never Mikey), I usually address
him as Michael, especially when praising or reprimanding him.

My name is Michael (it means "God like") - very fitting in my case!

I like the name, although most people call me Mike. My mother has
always INSISTED I be called Michael - she says it's my "real" name
and that's what I should be called. My grandmother has always called
me Mike and my mother has always finished it off for her, grandmother
says: "hey Mike", mother says: "chael!"

My wife and my sisters call me Michael - just about everyone else
uses Mike (and other things which we won't get into here....)

      Lee,

Leroy is no wimpy name either. Tell all scoffers that it means
    "royal".

I'm told that Michael originates from the ancient Greek, although
I've found in within other ancient languages. The name supposedly
originates from what is beleived to be one of the most ancient names
for "God": "ael", "eal", "el" or "al" (depending on specific
locale). I would guess that the other portion of the name derives
from the same greek word that gave us 'mimic' and 'mime'.

My son's name is Michael and I really like it too. He is a sturdy
little fellow also. We chose the name because it had not been used
in either of our families and because it was such a nice name.
My only problem with it (and soon to be a problem for him too, I'm
sure) is how popular it is. He looks real confused when we're
out and other people call their kids - like "are they talking to
me?" We too prefer Michael to Mike, but know he will be called
    that later on.

Hi, my name is, yes, you guessed it. If I'm not very much mistaken
I seem to recall from some book on names (which I don't own so I
can't verify now) that Michael is a Hebrew word name meaning
"Who is like God?". This seems to be meant as a question not as a
statement equivalent to some kind of "He who is like God".

    Regards

    Michael W.

PS: There are 3 of us here in our group, including my boss. That's
    why I always add a "W."

23.6I heard it was for troubleGLDOA::TREBILCOTTI can't believe it's only WednesdayWed Sep 22 1993 14:0521
I have always loved the name Michael. It's my father's name, my
brother's name, my cousin's name, and my boss' name. I told him when I
first started to work for him if I called him Michael instead of Mike
it was because of my brother.

My mother told me that the name Michael was associated with
trouble-makers. My father and brother certainly lived up to that in
school when they were young, and when I thought about it, all the
Michael's I knew in school, even in high school, were trouble-makers.
I noticed in the base note the author mentioned he felt the name would
have a bearing on the child's personailty.

I didn't have the opportunity to see the Michael's I knew as being
God-like (except maybe in their own heads) but rather trouble-makers.

I do love the name. I write books and Michael is the name of a main
character in one of them (although it's a woman) but I couldn't help
but wonder if it's meaning (Hebrew or Greek or whatever) really has
any bearing on how the child's personality will turn out?
