19.0. "Harrison" by 9412::INGRAHAM () Wed Jul 16 1986 13:17

After much thought we named our son Harrison, Harry for short.

I don't know its origin.

One thing I like about it is that it's a well-known name in America that's
simple and nice, not too strange (many recent names go out of their way to be
unusual), yet it's not too common among children. Naturally we wanted to
avoid over-used names. I was hesitant about Harrison because Harry seems like
an old-fashioned name only older people had, and Harrison is too heavy-duty as
a baby's name. (Also, back then it brought up images of Harrison Ford.) Well,
it's worked out pretty well. Harry does fit a younger kid, and if you look
around you find Harry isn't so uncommon. Harrison (especially Harrison
Ingraham --- pronounced "Ingram") has an aire of distinction worthy of, say, a
diplomat.

(By the way, some names that seem to be used a lot lately are Brandon, Brendan,
etc., and Megan. If you want to avoid the current craze in names, try the
schools, or a nurse in a hospital maternity section.)

19.1Add frequency and datesNCMWVX::WARRENSMon Jul 21 1986 15:4715
    One reason I started this notes file is so that I could plot frequency
    of names through time.

    For this reason, if people would add replies to notes like, My child
    is named xxx too, or my friend is yyy too, I would appreciate it.
     this could get tedios I suppose bt we could give it a try.

    Additionally, I have hopes of doing frquency through time comparisons,
    so if you do say my name is or my childs name is, some indication
    of year or date assign to the person would be helpful.

    (for all you Jack Bennys out there, you don't HAVE to reveal your
    age if you don't want to.)

19.2Take mom's last nameNIMBUS::HARRISONIcecreamoholicWed Dec 11 1991 16:345
    We are thinking of naming our baby Harrison, if it turns out to be a
    boy. Our rationale is that my last name is Harrison, but my husband's
    last name is Roody. Hence, Harrison ? Roody.

    Why not ? Harrison Roody, like John Harrison Roody or Steven Harrison
    Roody?

19.4To be called HarrisonNIMBUS::HARRISONIcecreamoholicThu Dec 12 1991 08:528
    Why not Harrison as the middle name?

    Because we would want him referred to as Harrison. And, I've never
    understood the rationale behind referring to someone by their middle
    name (unless, the child hates the first name and decides to go by the
    middle instead).

19.5Harrison John Roody?TIPTOE::STOLICNYThu Dec 12 1991 14:3211

    Harrison would be a great first name particularly considering that
    it is your last name. Be prepared for the very real possibility
    that the child will be called Harry at some point in his life -
    either by his choice or that of friends. Would that be okay?

    Were you looking for middle name suggestions? I like the sounds of
    Harrison Jon Roody and Harrison Paul Roody.

    Good luck!

19.6Harry is a problemNIMBUS::HARRISONIcecreamoholicThu Dec 12 1991 15:0111
    Unfortunately, I'm not wild about (a bit of an understatement, actually)
    the idea of the nickname Harry. We would run that risk, certainly,
    which is one of our hesitations.

    I wasn't specifically asking for middle name ideas, but I certainly
    welcome them. We're actually considering George, a name which neither
    of us really likes, but was the name of my husband's uncle.

    Thanks for the input.

19.7Harrison George RoodyMR4DEC::NIMBUS::HARRISONIcecreamoholicThu Mar 03 1994 15:2528
    Well, this is kind of late for an update, but what the heck ...

    My last reply was on December 12, 1991, and our son was born the next
    day.

    We did end up naming him Harrison George Roody, and we love the name.
    It is a little bit confusing when people either:

    	- just know my name (Leslie Harrison - didn't change mine when we
    	  got married), ask my son's name (and, I just give them his first),
    	  then they hesitate and ask ... so, his name is Harrison Harrison?

    	  Nooooooooooooooo, he has my last name as his first name and he
    	  and his dad share their last name.

    	- they just shake their head, when they ask for my full name, then
    	  my son's, and they assume that I'm giving his: last name, first.

    Oh well, it keeps people on their toes!

    And, as far as his being called Harry goes, it just doesn't happen.
    A few people have asked, but we tell them (emphatically, granted) that
    his name is not Harry, and it has worked out fine.

    So, sorry for such a longwinded response, not to mention two years
    late, but ...

    Well, Leslie, you're in good company. The Pulitzer Prize-winning
    columnist, Anna Quinlan (sp.?), has a son Quinlan!
