    I have also seen this spelled Courtney although I prefer the
    spelling above...
    
    I expect it's an Irish name and have always liked the sound
    of it... would appreciate it if anyone has any further

    Just to set the record straight.  This is a French name and the
    meaning is rather unimpressive.  It means "The girl who lives at
    the court."

    Courtney is a very common name in Ireland. It is a surname used

    I know a little girl named Courtney.  She's pretty, smart (sometimes
    TOO smart) and stubborn.
    
    There's also actress Courtney Cox (who I really don't like, but that
    doesn't detract from the name too much).
