    My older sister's name is officially 'Kathleen".
    
    In high school she purposely, and actively promoted, that she be
    called "Katie".
    
    Katie's middle name is Jean, so originally she was Kathleen Jean,
    very sing-songy like you mentioned with Maureen.
    
    I don't think Katie has any problems with her (more traditional)
    spelling, now that she has 'changed' her name.

    My name is Cathryn, too, like your daughter's except with a "C"
    (full name is Cathryn Mary). I like it, but have found that everyone 
    wants to spell it with a "K", and they get confused with the "ryn" 
    because it's different, but I like having the different spelling,
    and it was the only way that you could tell the Cathy's apart in
    my sorority.  Would you believe there were 4 of us and no one spelled
    it the same!!

    My name is also Catherine.  It seemed to have been a *very* common
    name for girls about 3 decades ago.  I too have the problem with
    everyone wanting to spell it with a "K".  A problem arose when my
    oldest brother married a "Kathe" (that's the spelling of her full
    given name)  All of a sudden we had two Cathy/Kathe Simons' in the
    family!  Our family first decided that they would call us "big Kathe"
    and "little Cathy" - neither of us liked that! - so we decided that
    Cathy-C and Kathe-K would be better.  That problem was somewhat
    resolved because I was recently married and *gladly* took my husband's
    name!  At least there aren't still two Cathy/Kathe Simons' in the
    same family!!

    My cousin recently had a baby girl and named her Kaitlyn, which
    is Irish for Kathleen, the grandmother's name. And we call her
    Katy, with a "y".   My cousin and I are only second generation
    Irish, our Grandmother came over from County Kilkenny (spelling?)
    when she was 18 yrs. old.   We keep a tradition of naming the eldst
    girl in each family with something that ends in "een".  My cousin's
    name is Coleen, mine is Loreen (invented by my mother, who's is
    Eileen).  
    
    I'm sorry, I just reread this, Kaitlyn's nickname is spelled Kaity,
    Talk about having to spell your name all the time!!  I've ALWAYS
    had to!  With an Italian sir name, Saranita, I'm used to having
    to spell both first and last name...I'm getting married in Oct.
    unfortunetely....it doesn't get much better.  "Kobilarcsik" 
    
    I guess I'll be spelling for the rest of my life.  But, that's ok
    because the compliments definitely make up for it as I'm sure
    Katy and Kaity will find out.
    

    Another variation on the name Kathryn is Karyn (or Caryn, Karen,
    Karin...) I know because on my birth certificate it says Kathryn,
    yet my mother preferred Karen.
    

    NOTHING PERSONAL, BUT I THINK THE NAME CATHERINE (KATHRYN, ETC.)
    IS HORRIBLY COMMON.  I THINK A CHILD'S NAME SHOULD AT LEAST BE
    A LITTLE UNIQUE.  THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS I LIKE LIVING IN GERMANY.
    I'M ALMOST THE ONLY LINDA AROUND.  
               

    
    According to Ripley's Believe It or Not, there are officially 24
    ways of spelling Kathryn, 12 with a K, and then 12 with a C.

    If you read the CELT conference (TALLIS::CELT) you'll find that
    the Irish pronunciation for "Kaitlyn" is "kawt-LEEN" as opposed
    to "KAYT-lin" making it very close to "Kathleen".  How to do you
    pronounce it?

    Funny how English names sounds better than the Dutch ones. In Holland
    the name is Katrien (pronounce the "a" as in "last" and the "ie"
    as in "seen"). The English pronunciation sounds better than ours.
    But we also have a Katrijn. The closest Englisch word I can find
    to explane the pronunciation of "ij" is like in "fine", but still
    our way of saying it is different. Nevertheless it is a very original
    name to give your baby when your not living in Holland. And also
    in Holland it is not used anymore.

    I'm happy with the name my parents gave me, and with the spelling.
    I don't really mind that people automatically assume that it's
    spelled "erine" at the end - I just correct them.  I don't have
    any nicknames anymore (I prefer to be called "Kathryn") but when
    I was young, I was "Kathy" to my mother and "Kat" to my father.
    Well, I guess my dad will always call me "Kat"...
    

    My sister's name is "Katharine".  She always went by "Kathie" and
    would become so terribly annoyed when it was spelled "erine" not
    "arine".  It never made sense to me....especially now that she has
    a son named "Nathanael" (notice the "ael" not "iel").  

    
    	My name's spelt the Catherine way and I always understood this
    	was the French/Spanish way of spelling it whereas the versions
    	beginning with K tend from the Scandinavian and Celtic countries.
    
    	I've always thought Katy was with the -y ending as well (as
    	in the Katy series of books - What Katy did etc..)
    
    	Just for interest, the name (with my spelling anyway) means
    	"Pure"

    I'm a Kathryn.  I always spelled my name Kathy until the third
    or fourth grade.  I got tired of having at least three Kathys in
    class, so I changed my spelling to Kathi then I was known as
    Kathi with an i.

    Great choice!  We have also named our daughter Kathryn. (Kathryn Lee)
    We call her Katie as well.  What I found out is quite a few people that
    I associate with are surprised by the spelling.  They expect Katherine.
