There is a related conference on PARENTING. Note 7.* concerns itself
with the naming of a baby; both first and last names. The later
is a special consideration for those mother's that kept their maiden
name, hyphenated theirs with their husbands, or made up a new one.

I believe that there is even a discussion on how to handle twins.

NOTES is new to me. BABYNAMES is a great idea. But how do I create
a new note for a new name?!

    Tracy
1.3Use WRITE8672::RINESMITHRAdisk bug busterFri Jul 18 1986 09:424
Use WRITE and after you've entered your thoughts, NOTES will prompt
you for the title to your note like it does when you use the REPLY
commmand. Of course you can always type HELP anytime you need
    it at the NOTES> prompt.
1.4NCMWVX::WARRENSMon Jul 21 1986 16:1113
As .3 said, if you want to start a new base note, use the WRITE
command. All I ask is that the title of the note (you will be prompted
for the title) is the name that the note talks about. (This may
not apply in all cases I realize).

If you want to adda note to a currently existing base note, you
want to type REPLY at the prompt. You had to do this to create
the note asking for help. Again, the reply can be titled and the
system will prompt you for it.

You are welcome to add any and all notes that you wish to.

    NOTICE:

I am about to leave the face of the Earth - or so that is what all
of my veteran SWS residency friends tell me.

I am going to go on my FIRST residency on Monday 9/15/1986. It
will be 6 months or who knows how long......

As such I will not be able to moderate this notes file as actively
as I have been. And certainly will not be available during the
day for any system, conference management activities.

So far, with the exception of the beginning of the conference, we
have not had any problems with the system relating to this conference.
(At least none reported to me).

This may or may not continue, I hope it does.

I am writing this note as a warning to all BABYNAMES noters that
to the best of my ability, BABYNAMES WILL STAY ON THE AIR. but
I am in a field office, geared to demos, projects and the ilk.
With me not in the office, people tend to not ask if they can blow
    things away, etc.

So, if you can't get to BABYNAMES, I may not be able to fix it for
a while, or even know about it. If things get blown away, they
might really be blown away. And in general, mail to me (while always
welcome and encouraged) may not have much immediate effect or affect
    on the conference.

Now with all of my disclaimers aside, I don't see any reason why
anything will happen. I hope to institute some backup procedures
independant of the sometimes frequent ones we do for the system
in general, and I plan on being an active noter almost daily. I
    just can't prromise anything.

So continue to enjoy - just don't pounce if something goes wrong
    and doesn't get resolved immediately.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and future patience.

1.6Ashley & Amber36903::SARANITAFri Jan 23 1987 10:4136
    Randy,

Did you have your babies yet? I guess by now you would, unless your
    wife's late...
I'm getting married this october 3rd....If I ever had twin girls,
I'd name them Ashley and Amber. I love the name Ashley and will
probably name my first girl that. Boys..well, y'know how names
remind you of people you know...Randy reminds me of a good friend
    and I've always liked it.

There's a tradition in my Italian family (most Italians second or
third generation still keep up this tradition) as far as naming
the eldest male. The way it works is the first and second name is
reversed every generation...ie: My grandfathers name is Charles
Salvatore Saranita, My father's is Salvatore Charles Saranita,
my Bother's is...you guessed it, Charles Salvatore Saranita.

Interesting? My mother's family, on the other hand has different
tradition...only a few generations old. I'm only second generation
Irish on her side and at least one girl in each family has a first
    name that ends in "een".

My name is Loreen, my mom's, Eileen...we also have Kathleen, Coleen,
Darleen, and Marleen. (Most of the familie's still in Ireland so
    dont know everyone's name)

Last but not least...I've always been very proud of my sir name
(Italians usually are) but soon I'll have to give it up for
a Slavian name. Yes, I thought of hyphenating, but could you
    imagine my checks...

        Loreen Rose Saranita-Kobilarcsik

good luck with the Father career.

Yes the twins were born June 1, 1986 (6 days before my daughter's 3
year birthday - talk about hectic).

Dylan Gene was born first, Braden Richard was born 26 mintes later.

It has come to my attention that my network link to Minneapolis

    RANDY,

I HOPE YOU ARE ABLE TO READ THIS NOTE. I AM NEW TO DEC AND TO
NOTES AND SOON TO BE NEW TO BABIES. THIS IS A TEST TO SEE IF I HAVE
LEARNED HOW TO USE NOTES. MY LAB TEST ON BABIES WILL BE LATE IN
MARCH IF EVERY THING GO'S ACCORDING TO SCHEDULE. WITH A LAST NAME
LIKE SMITH, MY WIFE AND I THOUGHT THAT WE NEEDED A STRANGE FIRST
NAME (LIKE HUNTER , WHICH IS MINE) FOR OUR FIRST CHILD. AS MOST
OF YOU PROBABLY KNOW, NAMING A CHILD IS A TRIAL AT BEST TO KEEP
EVERY ONE HAPPY. I HAVE ENJOYED READING THRU THE NOTES AND WILL
CONTINUE TO SEE IF ANY ONE ELSE HAS ANY IDEAS.

    Welcome, Hunter, to BABYNAMES...

And good luck to naming and parenting.

Your notes test worked fine. I would suggest not using all capital
letters in notes however, it looks like you're shouting - a point
in general in notes and electronic mail. However, no misinterpretation
taken in BABYNAMES, Babies are something to shout about!

    ---

    For the rest of you.

I have just been able to come into this file from another node on
the network, So I suspect (as evidenced by Hunter's note) the rest
of you can get access too.

Thus no announcement will be made in conferences.

    Enjoy the names

The EASYNET_CONFERENCES notefile listed BABYNAMES off the air, but...

BABYNAMES should be available again. You probably have been able
to get to it for a couple of weeks, but I haven't been able to stay
connected to EASYNET_CONFERENCES long enough to publish this.

A lot of system things have changed. We are now on a MicroVAX II
sys5 config (up from a VAX 780) with a couple of disks and 16MB
    (up from 4MB).

The network communications now go directly through Chicago rather
than through Minneapolis - a savings of 2 or 3 hops at least.
Additionally I am told the network line should be more stable for
a couple of reasons, it is faster and we are not sharing a stat
mux with higher priority terminal traffic.

You know the old saying: 'More babies, more names, more notes!'

    Enjoy

See note 94.4 in this conference.

Note to everyone: you should have TLE::EASYNET_CONFERENCES in your
notebook. This is where announcements of conference locations and
questions about conferences are answered. Hitting the 7 on your
numeric keypad (on the right) will add that conference to your
    notebook.

(Aside to Randy - you may delete this note [and maybe the previous one]

    network up, kinda.

As of yesterday, the network came back alive out here to Wisconsin,
(you know, 'When you say WIIIIIIIS-cons-sin, you've said it all!')

The network link is very shakey and probably slow, we got burned
in Chicago, and they have some 55,000 phone lines to worry about,
I bet ours is low on the old totem pole.

But, slow is better than none, and the future may be brighter.

I have noticed a few notes in this first topic that appear to be
associated with a different topic. i wont move them, because i
couldn't fguess at their true identity.

But a word to the wise.

If you wish to answer or comment to a note whether it is note NN.0
or NN.1, NN.2, etc just use the command REPLY. Type the REPLY a
the NOTES> prompt while still reading the note or reply that you
    wish to comment on.

If you want to start a new conference topic, perhaps a new name,
a new questions, a new subject use the command WRITE.

Everyone in my family has kids (not me yet), but we have some different
names -- Johnna Autumn, Alyssa, and Chelsea (all girls).

But Randy, I wanted to mention something about the twins. My boss
has twin boys about age 8. The parents decided not to tell them
which was born first -- to prevent over protection or favoritism,
I guess. When they ask who was first, the parents say, "Oh, I can't
    remember" or "the doctor forgot".

I thought that was a pretty good idea.

for a girl. Don't know the meaning but it was also the name of
a small town 2 miles outside of Jerusalem in the days of Christ.
If you are familiar with Tasha Tudor books, it was also her sister's

A friend of mine, Dave, was given the other christian names of Nelson
Battersby. This was a family tradition for the first-born son but
Dave didn't appreciate having a name that had the conversational
impact of a battle field nuke! He became very secretive about his
full name which in turn meant that people were curious to find out
what N. B. stood for. Elaborate ploys were devised, threats employed
and bribes offered but Dave kept his secret. Romance blossomed for
Dave, and as marriage loomed large on the horizon people began to
realize that the vicar would be intoning the words "Do you, David
**** *****, take this woman......". It seemed that a record attendance
was guaranteed in church. Now Dave was a sensitive soul and felt
that having hundreds of people fall off their pews was not the best
way to start a life of nuptial bliss. He therefore revealed all
to his best man (who was not easily shocked) and asked him to quietly
"leak" his name before the event. Unfortunately Dave's ability to
choose a best man was about as good as his family's ability to choose
names. Far from being discreet, the best man wrote a poem leading
up to the great revelation and set it to music. The public performance
took place on the stag night. During the uncontrolled laughter that
followed there were two heart attacks, three arrests for public
order offences and a Scotsman was seen to buy a round of drinks!
Dave himself spent several hours in a state of apoplexy with his
face doing a good impression of a large and hairy victoria plum.
The wedding itself went well, with only subdued murmuring and a
few sniggers marring the occassion. Shortly afterwards Dave took
a job with Hewlett Packard and no one has seen him since!

Oscar Wilde said that children often grow up to understand their
parents, but rarely to forgive them. I think he had a point!

Kevin. Any way to resolve this! If I choose Carl, can it be spelled
with a K versus a C (Karl)? Is this the German version? The reason
for this is that my name is Carol and I feel this is so close to
Carl that I will be naming my own baby after me, which I am not
excited about because the name Carol doesn't thrill me!

Sure you can spell Karl with a K. I used to work with someone who

I would think having a Carol and a Carl would be confusing. Of
course, I with you...I vote for Kevin.

Hi,
This is my first time on NOTES since I'm a newcomer to DEC.
BABYNAMES really caught my attention since twins are expected in
March '89 to my wife and me.

Coming up with names sure is difficult, but some possibilities we
have are Tamara, Kathrine and Stephen Clay. Clay is my wifes maiden
name, and since it is also a Christian name, will be included in
    the (first) boys name.

For those who like unusual names may I suggest my wifes name, Charmian.
This is pronounced Sharm_Ian, and she was Cleopatra's hand-maiden
as mentioned in Shakespeare's " Antony & Cleopatra ". It can also
    be spelt Charmion or Sharmian.

If it is a girl--Ashley or Amber Ann
If it is a boy--William(after Dad and grandpa) Anthony(name we will
use) Oneill(after my dad's brother who was killed at a young age)

All of the above with the last name Huntley. Is that too much??

Famous Tamara (for Australians) is Tammie Fraser, the wife of ex-Prime
    Minister, Malcolm Fraser.

I never told anyone my middle name all through school and still
don't reveal my middle name to anyone... We named our first
son Thomas, and now my wife is expecting again, she's due on
Dec. 10.. At Thanksgiving dinner at my parents, my father told
my wife and I he would appreciate us naming the child after
him/me if it was a boy... We just told him we were planning
on naming him Keith Richard, or Richard Keith if it was a
boy.. That is just going to have to satisfy him, at least
he's getting Richard in the name... It's my kid and I'll
not strap him with that impossible middle name I got!!!!!!!

liked it. My name is LaLonda and its always bothered me, so I wanted
an out of the ordinary name without being too different. My son
is 3 years and his name is Daniel Robert John, obviously we couldn't
decide. They are all names of good friends of ours. I am expecting
again in October and I think it's a boy but we already used all

What's wrong with Ann? Why do you think "mothers" who give their

1.59LEIGHAGRANPA::DGALOSITue Oct 31 1989 13:0910
Leigha is a girl's name. It is an Americanized version of the Hebrew
name Lea. A boy's name would be spelled Leigha for the other version
Lee. The American spelling of Leigha means happy....unlike the
    Hebrew spelling which means weary.

This is a beautiful name and since our background is not Hebrew
we wanted a different spelling. We found it in a book we bought
from Crown Books. This is our daughter's name. Leigha Marie.

that time has come, starting April 30. I will be back, however, on

won't let me; it IS being worked on, and I WAS told that I am coming
back), same node.

I will miss everyone and everything. If anyone wishes to send me

    NOTICE:

My My. This notesfile ha sbeen keeping nice and busy. I haven't done a
thing in it since I fell off the face of the Earth quite some time ago
    (9/15/1986) - Yeash!

I've peeked in a few times, and have tried to read most notes, but not
very well. I still love BABYNAMES, just not a participant.

My sister-in-law is pregnant so I may be looking closer soon.

Anyway, I am moving from Madison, WI to Atlanta, GA.

I do not know the system resources space policy there. I want to move
control of BABYNAMES to Atlanta when I move (end of May). BABYNAMES
will stay put until I get the information to move it.

HOWEVER! I may not be able to move it. In that case BABYNAMES will
    probably go off the air!

I will try to give you as much notice as I can but it may come to that.

BABYNAMES began with my need for names for my Twin boys (Braden and
Dylan - they are turning 4 this June 1!) I was also going to do some
name research based on the entries in the conference, who knows it may
still happen. As such I do not want to stop BABYNAMES. If it has to go,
is anyone out there able to pick it up and allow me or yourself to
    moderate it?

As you can tell from my involvement, BABYNAMES 'runs itself'. Not much
work to it, just network and disk resources.

Send mail to this address or Rand Warrens @MZO or notes in this
    conference.

Again, BABYNAMES may move or go off the air, new potential sites
    solicited.

Cheers and keep those names coming.....

hi, I'm new to babynames too. I just wanted to throw in a couple of
names in case anyone was interested. Geniveve or Rebecca Dyan or even
Nicole Anastasia are favorites of mine for girls. For a boy I like real
strong names like David (King David in the Bible) or Paul. My father in
law has a nice name,Joaquim. It is pronounced several different ways
depending on where you are from. He is Portuguese/Italian and it is
handed down as mentioned in an earlier note ie: he is Joaquim Joseph,
his father is Joseph Joaquim, and so on and so forth. My husbands
mother was in a bad mood and ruined it though by naming my husband
James Joseph (which I like anyway). We named our son Jason Joaquim for
Jason in the bible (my mothers choice) and the middle name is obvious.
Daughters name by the way is Michele Lee. Not for the actress! She was
supposed to be one of the above names but when asked at the hospital I
promptly replied Michele Lee as if it had been planned!!! I don't know!

Trudy (not short for Gertrude either)
