Does anybody have any theories on what's up with Safeco Equity fund (SAFQX)? They appear to be on a steep downhill ride. From NetNAVs : Date . . . NAV . . . .Offered . . Check to see if there was a dividend/distribution declared on 9/29. I don't think the overall market moved that much on that day, and it was near the end of a quarter.

I own Safeco Equity, and if I remember correctly, there is a distribution at the end of September. Haven't gotten my statement yet, however. BTW, during Doug Johnson's tenure, Safeco Equity wasn't your typical growth & income fund. Johnson said that, he looked for some home run opportunities (small growth companies) leavened with some singles hitters (larger dividend paying companies). Since he left Safeco for Smith Barney, the Equity fund looks a bit more like a "normal" growth & income fund. I'm thinking of moving my funds elsewhere, but haven't decided where yet. Wes

Thanks, you both were right. I got my statement last night. I've only been with them since January, so I hadn't seen this before (none of my other (very few) funds have displayed as sharp a drop at distribution time). There again, I don't think any of them have given me such a large distribution either. For grins (and because this is the only way I can grasp what's happening to my money), I had Quicken calculate my Average Rate of Return on SAFQX for the calendar year before and after adding in the reinvestments, but using the 9/29 closing value in both calculations, and it went from 18% to 33%. Can someone refresh my memory - are reinvested dividends & capital gains taxed in the year they are reinvested, or only when you sell? Mike
920.4 | taxed that year | MSBCS::HURLEY | Fri Oct 06 1995 11:55 | 2
They are taxed for the year you receive them unless your fund is in a tax-deferred plan like a 401k or 403 etc..
