| Alot of the high tech copmpanies are traded at or near their 52-week
highs. It's hard to tell (for mw anyway) whether this is a good time to
get in on it or not. Now, the market is looking up on technology
stocks. I would think this may be a good time to consider sell if you
have bought yours awhile ago. Buying? I just can't gather the guts to
do it now. But, who knows? The ride is not over, yet.

Good point.
Just unloaded 2/3 of my S3 holdings, but refuse under any
circumstances to sell my Motorola. Mike is right, semiconductors are
at very lofty levels, and taking some money OFF the table is a good
idea.
MOT however only derives 30% of its revenues from semis, the rest
comes from wireless communications which will only grow on a steady
basis worldwide.
If "tech" stocks is your bag these days, I'd take a real hard look
at the biotech stocks again.

861.4 | Semi building boom/bust? | ASDG::HORTON | Paving the Info Highway | Fri May 12 1995 13:07 | 15 |
| Don't know about the rest of you folks, but I've heard about a lot of
new fabs opening up lately. Seems the industry is going through a
classic over-building phase. Short term this is good for the
makers of semiconductor process equipment and test equipment
(e.g., Applied Materials, Lam Research, Tencor, KLA), but when the
building boom slows, even a little, sales and earnings will suffer.
Overcapacity will also hurt the makers of chips. With expensive fabs
to pay for, chip makers will do anything to keep their lines filled.
I expect to see incredible price competition over the next few years,
with adverse effects on earnings.
I'm with Mr. Corson: look for the next boom somewhere else.

861.5 | If you sell some DEC stock, where would you put it? | HELIX::SONTAKKE | | Wed Jan 24 1996 12:30 | 11 |
| Apart from Fidelity (don't like their sales charge), is there any other
mutual fund which is heavily invested in the semi-conductor industry
right now and taking a severe beating?
It looks like a right time to get it.
Incidentally, is there a WWW resource to find the top stocks held by
mutual funds?
Thanks,
- Vikas

T. Rowe Price Science & Technology.

861.7 | | HELIX::SONTAKKE | | Wed Jan 24 1996 15:28 | 13 |
| But it doesn't seem to have taken real beating. Assuming the 13%
drop on Dec 27, 1995 was due to the distribution, it is still close to
its 52wk high (discounting the distribution).
It can't be heavily invested in semiconductors. Jun 95 report lists
14.8% in Semis.
Same is true with the Invesco Strategic Technology, it han't taken
ay appreciable hit at all, once again, discounting the distribution.
Thanks,
- Vikas

861.8 | So three percent up front is *cheap*.... | LACV01::CORSON | Higher, and a bit more to the right | Wed Jan 24 1996 19:02 | 11 |

Even though it has a 3% sales charge, Fidelity's Select Electronics
Fund is one of my persnal favorites.
It is all semiconductor manufacturers, equipment makers, etc. Lots
of MU, TI, VLSI, etc. It has also returned over 30% the past five
years...
And my bet is the next five also...

Not if you are looking for real-time data. It's my understanding
it's at least 6 weeks if not longer that funds report on what
their weightings in each sector is "at the time".
As far as individual holdings the fund's annual report, if not
semi-annual reports, will list every stock held by the fund "as
of the date on the report" which again comes out much later
than the end of the time period reported on. However for funds
with low turnover rates it should be pretty accurate.
You can always call the fund company and request their most recent
annual or semi-annual report usually[/never] at no cost to you.

| The SEC Edgar server (http://www.sec.gov/edgarhp.htm) can help a
little. The SEC requires a filing if an investment company (e.g.
a mutual fund or fund family) holds more than a certain
percentage (I think 5%) of a company's shares.
You can look up a company through Edgar and see if the filing is
in the archives. I'd tell you the form number, but I don't
remember what it is. There's a corresponding filing when the
holding drops below the threshold.

861.11 | Book to bill | 2155::michaud | Jeff Michaud - ObjectBroker | Fri Aug 09 1996 13:12 | 6 |
| FWIW, the semiconductor book-to-bill ratio that was due out
on Wednesday but defered was released yesterday (after market
close as usual).
The July number was .85, down from a downward revision of the
June number of .88.
