You are talking heresy here. But in any case the rule of thumb is
to buy after the split (watch the stock closely after it actually
splits since most stocks will dip downward as holders sell hunks
of their split shares).
H-P is a solid performer, BTW, in nearly all its business lines.

But we have performed like that (and even better)! While
10.625 sounds impressive, it's only 10% increase in value
(still not too shabby). But remember DEC was trading at
below 19 just last June or July. We're now at 36, a whopping
90% increase!

H-P already distributes everywhere Packard Bell does. They call
'em printers. Since the channel is already in place, H-P just says
now we have PCs too. Since H-P already makes PCs, why would they
want PB?
It would not be a good move on H-Ps part. It would be stupid,
like Digital deciding to purchase AST.

| I live in Sacramento where Packard Bell is BIG news since they are in
the process of relocating here from the LA basin. They are moving into
the old Sacramento Army Depot that was just closed due to one of the
base closing rounds several years back. At the same time they are
expanding operations and hiring in the Sacramento area like crazy.
HP is also here too building PCs on the other end of town out in the
suburb of Roseville. Seeing what Packard Bell and HP are doing here
in town, my feeling is that these rumors are false. I have been wrong
before, but I really don't see anything that would indicate it.

HP is fairly visible in the scientific community for electronic

Their non-computer-related annual revenue is only a few billion (4-5?).

Amin
Hewlett-Packard Company board of directors today approved a 2-for-1
split of the company's common stock and raised the quarterly dividend
by 20 percent. The company also announced the promotion of Larry
Tomlinson, HP treasurer, to vice president.
The record date for the stock split is June 21, 1996. Shareholders of
record as of that date will receive one new share of common stock for
every share they owned on that date. Distribution of new shares will
begin on July 15, 1996.

As JC said, the active readership (the ones most likely to
respond to a query) of most any conference use NEXT UNSEEN
to follow a conference.
Creating duplicate topics every month like on USENET because
the previous topic was not super-recent (Feb '95 BTW is
still relatively recent, it's not unusual to see recent
replies to topics with the last reply alot older than that)
creates a conference that is a mess, hard to follow, and then
hard to find anything when you do need to find something.
And out of curiosity, why did you need an answer to your
question "quickly"? If you need reliable information quickly
you should call your broker! Trusting the accuracy of free
advice will get you what you paid for :-)

In addition to the arguments already presented, it is also the case
that we have KEYWORDS like "HWP" that make most stocks easy to find.
