815.0. "What is Dow Jones, really?" by JOKUR::FALKOF () Fri Jan 06 1995 08:46

    What is Dow Jones? I know they perform research and calculate an
    average that is used for evaluation of market performance, but do they
    also manage portfolios like Fidelity and others? I never hear of them
    other than in reference to the DJIA. Likewise, what about Standard &
    Poor?

    Thank you from a pre-novice investor.

    	Eric, you are very pre-novice, but that's OK, you are in the right
    place.

    	Dow Jones & Co. are the publishers of The Wall Street Journal,
    among other corporate assets. They do not manage money (except in
    the fiscal sense), are very profitable, also are the creators of
    the Transporation and Utility Index (DJIA stands for the Dow Jones
    Industrial Average).

    	My suggestion would be to hit the books at your local library
    for a while, and maybe subscribe to the WSJ. It really is a terrific
    newspaper.

    	Best.
