756.0. "Cabletron - opinions about upcoming split?" by MNATUR::LISTON (CSP-PSC/E - When you need to deliver the very best!) Wed Aug 10 1994 11:34

I saw in yesterdays Boston Globe that Cabletron is splitting 2 for 1
next month, for shareholders of record on August 19th. Has anyone been
    following them lately? Any opinions?

I bought Cabletron about 2 years ago at $60 and just sold about
3 months ago at $112. It was one of the best stocks I ever had.

You have to have a long term focus on this stock because it
can fluctuate so much. It's up 10 one day and down 15 the next.

I think I would watch it for a while before I would dip into
it again. S&P is ranking it a buy.

Since they announced a split, how does that work? Can you buy
shares today and still participate in the split? or would
you buying shares today at the split price?

The answer is yes. As long as you are a stock holder as of 8/19 you
will be part of the split. Beware though, the stock usually goes down
a tad bit right after a split. I did this with Home Depot, hoping to
take advantage of the split and not having to pay additional commission
for the shares I acquired as part of the split. In this case, I could
have bought the post-split number of shares and after paying commission
on all the shares, I would have still saved some money, had I waited to
buy after the split. Microsoft on the other hand split 2 for 1 not too
long ago and has been rising since then.

    Hope this helps.
