I think you answered your own question. ALL kids love McDonalds and
their growth potential in emerging economies around the globe is large.
Longterm McDonalds could be a part of any portfolio.
|
741.2 | They also have a DRiP! | 18889::BEAULIEU | | Tue Jul 12 1994 16:44 | 6 |
| In addition, they offer a Dividend Reinvestment Program (DRP) whereby
you can buy shares directly from the company rather than through a
broker - which means you don't pay a commission. After you purchase your
1st share, you are eligible to enroll in the DRP. My husband and I have
been buying 1 or 2 shares a month this way for almost a year now.

| How do you initially purchase your first share so that you can enroll in the
DRP ? Most brokers don't want to sell a single share, do they ? I need some
detailed information on how to initially purchase that first share of McDonalds
stock.
Thanks,
Darlene

| Re: .3
I believe a broker will allow you to buy an odd lot (ie.
a lot not a multiple of 100), but may charge you extra.
Not to mention that a broker is going to charge you the
min. commision anyways (could be more than the price of
that single share!).
I also believe companies do not like stock holders
who own so little shares (such as 1 :-) because the
overhead per shareholder is constant and it can cost
them more in paperwork than what your 1 share is worth
(I've heard of co.'s offering such shareholders to
buy the shares back directly to clear them off the books).
In any case, if you are serious about this as an investment,
now that the stock has split, I suggest you buy more than
1 share!

741.5 | Shares can be bought thru the NAIC. | LEDS::VESESKIS | | Wed Jul 13 1994 09:57 | 19 |

In regards to buying 1 share of McDonalds via the DRP program it
was done through the NAIC (National Association of Investors Corp).
Do a DIR/TITLE=NAIC for more information in this conference. As a
member of the NAIC there are over 200 companies that allow you to
purchase stocks directly from them. You initially purchase 1 with the
NAIC acting as the agent. After you recieve confirmation that you own
the share you may then purchase additional shares at a regular basis.
There is no commission charge for purchasing additional shares and
there is a one time $5 charge you pay to the NAIC for buying the
initial share.
I have found this an excellent way to purchase stocks without
paying brokers and a good way to dollar cost average as well. Though
there are only roughly 200 companies involved with this particular
program with the NAIC they are constantly adding more since it is
becoming very popular with the members.

This sounds interesting. I guess I'll have to go read the other

their overhead cost per shareholder talked about earlier?[ZZ

It costs about $600K and as I understand you have to go thru a rigerous
12-18 month training program all the way from flipping hamburgers to
management. someone else may be able to elaborate on this.

franchise then $600K to build the building.

| If you don't have that kind of money in the bank, you might be able to
find someone who has run a franchise for a long time and wants to sell
out and retire. Maybe make an arrangement whereby you buy over time.
Of course, whether a McDonald's franchise is a good investment today
is an open question. The historical record is pretty positive.

Back to the subject of DRips...
If anyone is interested in learning more about DRiPs (they are offered
by hundreds of companies) there are several books available on the
subject. The book I have "Buying Stocks Without a Broker" (I don't have
the authors name available at the moment), is full of information about
DRiPs, it answers questions such as "Why do companies offer DRiPs?",
lists and evaluates the companies offering the DRiPs, and even gives
examples of possible "model portfolio's. (This book lists companies
that offer DRiPs which are not available through the NAIC as well as
those that are) This book and many others on the subject are available in
any of the local bookstores as well as through the NAIC and sell in the
$15 - $20 range.
So far, I have bought all of my DRiP's through the NAIC, however, I have
also heard of an organization called "First Share" that works something
like this:
You pay an annual fee of $12 to join.
You can buy the 1 share of stock you need through the organization.
You must be willing to sell 1 of your shares if asked, to someone else
in the organization.
I have more info on this one at home and will look it up if anyone is
interested.

RE .12
It was my understanding that McDonalds was not allowing franchise
owners to sell out, per se, they were buying up all the franchises as
soon as anyone thought of selling one? Maybe it's something contractual
with the franchise owner's, that is, that McDonald's has first right of
refusal in buying an existing restraunt?? I'm really not sure, but I
thought I read that some time back.
