733.1 | Not my type of Banco | ROYALT::BMORRISON | | Thu Jun 16 1994 12:09 | 12 |
| Hi,
I looked up BLX (NYSE). I think that this is Banco Latinoamericano.
It's now trading at about $34 per share. Nine months ago it
was at $39 per share. Perhaps the broker thinks that its time
to get back in again. I personally would want to follow this for
a while before I would dive in.
I did not investigate the others.

733.2 | How do you purchase foreign stock? | UCROW::PEARSON | | Tue Jun 21 1994 15:39 | 3 |
| I've seen China Light & Power recommended in other places as well.
I don't think that there are ADRs for this company. Can you buy
stock listed only on foreign exchanges through a regular broker?

733.3 | China Light & Power | GLDOA::MARSHALL | | Tue Jun 21 1994 16:00 | 3 |
| I've never tried, but I think you can. One way of finding potential
investments is to look at who/what the top performing mutual funds are
investing in. The Berger funds just added CL&P to their portfolio.

733.4 | Some brokers are specialists in foreign equities | RECV::TAMER | | Tue Jun 21 1994 18:47 | 7 |
| There are US brokers specializing in foreign equities. i.e., they can
purchase equities directly in foreign markets.
If you're interested, I can dig up some names for you.

733.5 | Fidelity can trade China Light & Power | UCROW::PEARSON | | Wed Jun 22 1994 13:46 | 8 |
| I just called my brokerage (Fidelity) and asked. China Light & Power
is on their pink sheets so they can trade it. You just can't do it
through their FOX online system. The current quote is $5.22 bid and
$5.30 asked. The minimum trade is 1000 shares.
I didn't get the answer to whether I could do this with any stock on
the Hong Kong exchange or not, but I suppose if a stock is as heavily
traded as this one it would be.

733.6 | Beware of Hong Kong financial bubble | ENQUE::TAMER | | Wed Jun 22 1994 14:21 | 2 |
| A warning though. The Hang Seng index is quite vulnerable at this time.
It's been very volatile this year.

It's been very exciting on the US exchanges also.

While the Dow Jones is down 9% from peak, Hong Kong is down ~30%.

733.9 | Ah, but DJUA traditionally leads DJIA | VMSDEV::HALLYB | Fish have no concept of fire | Wed Jun 29 1994 16:12 | 7 |

The Dow Jones Utilities, on the other hand, were down 31% from their peak.
Kinda tells me the Dow Jones Industrials have more to go on the downside,
once we get past the seasonal strength of early July.

733.10 | Agree with .9 | ENQUE::TAMER | | Wed Jun 29 1994 17:20 | 5 |
| Agree John.
But if the DJIA goes down by 30% (from peak), Hong Kong could fall
another 30%.
