| Are they located in California and do they offer timing advice via
newsletter also?. If that is the case I know that their timing advice
is very "cautious" and therfore their results are what I would classify
as "low". But if you are risk averse and want some decent returns for
a low level of risk, then try out their newsletter first and then hand
them some money to manage. If "Fabian" that you are descibing is not
the Fabian Family then you need to check out their documented results
from an independent source for the last 3-5 years minimum. All other
checks before you hand money to a money manager need to be done before
you take the first step.
Good Luck.

| .0 didn't explicitly say if this was a newsletter that offered advice
for readers to act upon, or if it was some sort of money management
firm that actually did the investing/trading for you.
I'd guess it's probably Dick Fabian's newsletter; he's getting older
these days and I think his son does a lot of the work now. They track
a variety of indices and maintain a 39-week moving average, buying and
selling when the index crosses and closes above or below the average.
At least that's what they did several years ago. Worked real well in
1987, if you were nimble enough to act immediately upon the news...
if you did, you got out on Friday Oct 16th. Miss 1 day and you got out
at the bottom.

| Just as a point of interest, Dick Fabian issues a "sell" signal for
mutual funds at the close of business yesterday, March 30

It's not even a point of interest if we don't know what kind of mutual
funds. U.S Equities? Specific sectors? Bond funds? Money Market funds?
International funds?

| Sell them all...... the sky is falling.
Buy High, sell low, that's the motto.
They should make clients sign a form saying that they understand
what LONG TERM means. Apparently, most don't. Personally, I just
opened two fund accounts yesterday.

It IS a point of interest simply because so many people follow this
advice. Whether it's snake oil or sound money will depend on the future
which, as always, will be written by the survivors.
Knowing what little I know of Fabian, I would say this covers virtually
all equity funds except "contrarian" plays.
Things to consider buying: oil, defense. May be a bit early for oil and
late for defense but I think these sectors will do well, relative to
the market, for several months.

| re: my earlier reply.
I did not provide any specific info on Fabien because his "plan"
has been discussed previously in this file.
Briefly, he has several "composites" or plans, including a
Mutual Fund Composite of growth funds, an International Fund plan,
Gold Funds, and Asset Allocation plan. I only follow the Mutual
Fund Composite and that's the plan that received the sell signal this
week.

I did a search of 'Fabian' and 'Fabien' and found no such discussion.
I found a couple of references to a long distance number and the fact
that they are involved in market timing, but that is all.
Your original post said something to the equivalent of 'sell mutual
funds'. It was simply not possible to decypher that 'sell mutual funds'
meant 'sell the Mutual Fund Composite of growth funds' of Fabian's
"plan". 'mutual funds' wasn't even capitalized to indicate a special
meaning.
I did not mean to come off as rude, but the reply was
interesting-but-useless without some supporting information. It was
not my intention to rathole the topic, but to find out what was
meant by 'mutual funds' (and I did).

| With the market sell-off Monday the 15th, the major averages have
dropped below their 39-week moving average. This would mean a sell
signal for U.S. equity funds, if anyone is actually following the
strategy. This would be too bad since IMHO we're near the bottom.
