696.1 | I like Schwab | KYOSS1::BOYLE | Dirty Jobs Done Dirt Cheap | Tue Mar 15 1994 10:43 | 25 |
| I use Schwab for both my retirement and personal accounts. I believe
their no-load fund list is as comprehensive as anyones (others offer
similiar services). Their commisions on stock purchases is decent (not
the lowest, somewhere in the middle).
In addition, being a big house, stock transactions occur very rapidly.
They have touch tone service that is good for account information and
buys and sells.
In addition to their no-load funds, they offer a large number of funds
for a minimal load, These funds are typically no load funds bought and
sold under the Schwab umbrella.
Overall, I am pleased with the service.
I checked into the software, but it is relatively costly. It provides
stock quotes, buy and sell features, and reports for a fee. Most of
these features are available under the touch tone system. I chose not
to get the software.
Hope this helps, and is not too late,
Jack Boyle

Issue??) had an article comparing Schwab and a couple of other
brokerage firms offering a similar service.

| I am very pleased with the service I receive from them.
You need to understand and abide by the "short term redemptions"
agreement that they want you to do. Other than that, they have such a
comprehensive set of Fund Families that you cannot but love their
offerings.
I have their DOS based product and just migrated to their WINDOWS based
product. Both are very very good. I prefer the Windows version of
their product 'cause of the simplicity. It also keeps all data tagged
with the window even when you log out (which EQ did not do).
Prices for the stock transactions are based on the SERVICE provided -
You are ONLY getting what you PAY for. Granted when you compare the
stock or fund transactions costs to other DEEP DISCOUNT BROKERS, one
would think that Schwab is not worth it. I disagree - maily 'cause
Schwab does provide the 24 hour service , not much wait, TeleBroker,
Mutual Funds, Transaction notifications by phone and INSTANT EXECUTIONS.
So, all in all - if you want all of the above and see the value in
getting all of it - you have to pay the price - IT IS CONVENIENT TO SAY
THE LEAST. They even gave me a BEAUTIFUL COMBINED 1993 TAX TRANSACTION
REPORT (with ALL my Buys and Sells of stocks/funds/options - listed by the
ones reported to IRS and not reported to IRS!) AT NO COST.
GO FOR IT......

| I have a brokerage account and an IRA account with them and have been
very happy with the service. I use the software they sell (StreetSmart$59)
and use it almost daily. It is windows based and very well done. You can
buy securities get instant quotes. up to the minute account positions,
balances, P&L's and performance graphs. You can also access Dow Jones's
database to get info on just about anything. If you are a fairly active
trader or tracker this is a good investment. They give you a 30 day
money back guarantee and also have a demo disk available.

I assume you need a PC and a modem to use this software. Is the number you
call for this service toll free?? phone bills could get high if not...

| Support is provided through a toll free #, unlike most other PC SW
products.

| No they do not have a toll free number but a whole lot of cities are
identified to have local numbers to call - for eg there are 4 different
numbers that I can call in Chicago - these are Compuserve access
numbers by the way - they automatically route your call to the Schwab
server and wallah.....
You need a PC with WIN 3.1 and a modem upto 14,400 baud to make this
happend (of course along with the software).
Good luck.
