684.0. "Quarterdeck Office SYstems (QDEK)" by MSBCS::BROWN_L () Fri Feb 18 1994 12:11

Does anybody follow Quarterdeck Office Systems (QDEK) closely?

They fell from grace (14-->2) after Deskview bombed and DOS 5/6
came out with a built in memory manager. But QEMM cales are actually
moving up (#2 retail package behind Windows) as folks seem to
be running into limitations with EMM386, and there doesn't appear
anything from Microsoft on the horizon. On the other hand, QDEK
appears to be a one pony show with QEMM, and there is more competition
    now (NETROOM, 386MAX).

Does anyone know latest earnings/debt/health of the company; or wish
to comment on turnaround possibilities? The current 2 1/4 price and
low trading volume could make for a nice upside percentage move on
    an earnings surpise.
    thanks, KB

It probably has more to with STAC than earnings, but I'm up over 30%
since entering .0 a week ago.

What is STAC? Stock Market ACtivity?

2 to 3 in under a month is a pretty good gain, percentage-wise.

STAC recently won a case with Microsoft (more or less). It is
possible that this had positive effects on other companies that make
system add-ons.

The finding was that Microsoft infringed on STAC's patents, and had
to make a big payment to STAC. They also found that STAC infringed
on Microsoft's trade secrets (using undocumented system calls) and
had to make a much smaller payment to Microsoft.
