638.0. "Any perspective on 3DO?" by DATABS::HUSSAIN () Thu Dec 16 1993 12:37

    Any perspective by anyone on ThreeDO (3DO), NAS:THDO? Prices have
    dropped to 23.5 from an October price of 42.

    Just a lot of negative news on 3DO lately...

    Dan Dorfman stated that some analyst said that the stock is overpriced.

    MediaVision announced that they will build similar machines at half the
    3DO price ($300 versus $700) in 1995.

    3DO is issuing another 1 million shares soon. The company just went
    public last summer.

    The first product went on sale in October with only 3 games to play,
    and the initial excitement is waning.

    re: 3DO

    Based on what I've heard about 3DO, I'd hold off. Their CEO promised
    42 games would be availalbe by Christmastime and they've delivered 2 or
    3. Now the CEO says there'll be 30 titles by February. Are you gonna
    believe him now?

    Also, Atari is getting ready to come out with a new machine with more
    power and speed than the 3DO for a lower price. I believe it will be
    called the Jaguar. Sega also has a CD game available, but I don't know
    much about their system. There are also several other companies that are
    entering the fray and 3DO doesn't have the kind of overwhelming competitive
    advantages (speed, price, selection) to ward off it's competitors.

    I'm sort of a novice with respect to the markets, but I know my games
    and I really don't think 3DO is going to be a runaway hit anytime soon.
    I think it's much more likely that it'll get creamed by faster
    machines, cheaper machines, machines with more memory, machines with
    greater selection, or machines that combine the above characteristics.
