543.0. "S&P 500 based funds" by KAHALA::HOLMES () Wed Aug 04 1993 23:34

For a private investment, (my parents) what are the names of the mutual
    or stock funds based on the S & P 500 ?

I think one of the DEC save funds is based on the S&P 500 but don't know
    the name of that either.

Are the more than 1 ? (Sounds like a dumb question but what the heck)

    Thanks,
    Bill

Probably the highest regarded among this community is the
Vanguard Index Trust. Good SP500 correlation, low expense.
It's an open-ended fund, meaning you buy or sell at the
close-of-day price, which is calculated based on the shares they own.

Another way to go would be to buy the "Standard and Poor's
Depository Receipts", called "Spiders" (after S.P.D.R.),
which is akin to a closed-end fund. Meaning you buy and
sell the receipts like stocks, anytime during the day.
Also means the value of the shares will not necessarily
correlate with the underlying index, though it should be close.

The Vangaurd S&P 500 index funds is onw of the best. A recent Morningstar
5-star Investor cited it as being the fund that most closely represents
the actual index. It was and interest article. It mentioned not only the
lower expense, but a more accuate simulation of the actual index.
