534.0. "AT&T or MCI ?" by MSBCS::SHAH () Tue Jul 20 1993 11:53

With the recent request to FCC for long distance rate hike from AT&T
(meaning more profits) and the stock soaring already, is this a good buy ?

How about MCI in comparison ?

Your views will be greatly appreciated ..

    Thanks,
    /Alkesh

Value Line gives ATT a 1 for safety and a 2 for timeliness, I believe.

Anybody know what happened to MCI stock? It looks like it went down
quite a bit. I noticed it is somewhere in the 20's now and if I'm
not mistaken it was recently in the high 40's!

    Did it split?

(I couldn't find any other note to put this in)

Big news this am on CNBC is that AT&T is splitting up into three
companies. They are going to sell of the capital management part, and
break the rest down. I didn't catch what the three are going to be
    though.
Yesterday was at ~57, now T is at 63...

I also heard that they are completely getting out of the PC
business (or at least cutting back on that business with
the layoff of 8,000 employees in that area).

I thought this last piece of it would help DEC stock but ...

The piece I read was saying that they are "reorganizing" their computer
business and is expected to layoff 10,000 people.

There was a big writeup about this in yesterday's (Sept 21) WSJ.
Overall it sounds like a good idea. The equipment side will benefit
from increased sales to AT&T competitors such as MCI, Sprint, etc.
Sounds like the computing side will lay off about 8,500 people. One
issue may be loss of name recognition for the equipment and computing
    spinoffs.

You may be right...BUT NOT if, for some reason, thse companies choose
to call themselves WESTERN ELECTRIC COMPANY and NCR Corporation.

If I were responsible for "branding" these companies I wouldn't think
twice (assuming the names are still the properties of AT&T at this
    point).

I assume at least one of them will change its name to "American".
