506.0. "L.C. Wegard, brokerage firm?" by STAR::GOLDSTEIN (Andy Goldstein, VMS Development) Wed Jun 23 1993 22:15

Anyone ever heard of or done business with L. C. Wegard? They're a
brokerage firm based in New York (where else?!) with offices in Providence
and elsewhere in the northeast. I've got a broker on the phone trying
to sell me on some small cap stocks ($5 - $10, NASDAQ listed).

He tells a reasonably plausible story and I understand what small cap
stocks are about. Don't mean to put the life savings here; just get
a bit of money more on the edge than GM and the like.

I've been burned in the past by the likes of Robert Brennan (First Jersey
Securities and Storm Door Co., for those of you not in the know) and would
just as soon not repeat the experience. Just looking to find out if these
guys are reputable. Feel free to post replies or mail directly to me if
you'd rather not speak publicly. Any reactions appreciated.

I'd be suspect of anyone calling me on the phone to try to sell me
    something, especially anything like securities.

Re .1: Indeed.

And at the same time, I recognize the need for brokers to solicit new
business. That's why I'm bothering to ask at all.

506.4Focus on Digital list of names??NEADEV::SAMPSONOn the Road Again - and again - and..Sun Jun 27 1993 09:4314
I was called about three weeks ago by the same outfit. They are legit
but not very large. From the discussion I had with the person on the
other end it sounded like he was being trined on the job. Every
question I had for him (he was trying to discuss CHEF INTERNATIONAL) he
either was guessing at the answer or had to ask the person watching
over his shoulder. He didn't even know the ticker symbol! He did fax me
some info on the company - I didn't like it - he called me back twice -
I had to insist he stop calling - end of that story.

I wonder if the have a digital list of names! Anyone else been
    contacted?

I'm quite sure Brennan and CHEF INTERNATIONAL are linked in someway
but I don't recall the details. When I was contacted by these folks
I ask about the linkage, the pest from L.C. Wegard thanked me for
    my time and hung up.

Well, I was just contacted by these guys and they were also pushing
this CHEF Int. So I told the guy to fax me some info, and guess what,
Robert Brennan owns 47% of the company's common stock. No conflict of
    interest here!!!!! :-)

Have any of the stocks that Brennan's pushed done well? Maybe 15 years ago
I was cold called by a 1st Jersey guy pushing International Thoroughbred
Breeders. I occasionally followed it in the stock listings, and it didn't
go anywhere.
506.8IMNP??NEADEV::SAMPSONOn the Road Again - and again - and..Mon Jul 26 1993 15:375
I got a second call from the LCW broker again today. He was pushing a
company called "Immunotheraputic" (ticker is IMNP).

Comments, again - on IMNP not the broker.

I don't now this stock but... Ask your broker if they are a market maker in this
stock. If the answer is yes... beware as they may have a large inventory of this
stock on their books they are trying to unload before it nose dives.

I put IMNP into my QuoTrek and have come up empty all day. Either they
gave you a bad ticker symbol or IMNP trades so thinly it's not worth
considering. Even if YOU don't mind your stock being thinly traded,
others will and THEY won't buy.

506.11too small to track!!NEADEV::SAMPSONOn the Road Again - and again - and..Tue Jul 27 1993 21:2922
    ref .9
Yes, the have a large position. The comp[any is 66% owned by Primedex.
The other 33% is "public". LCW has a big make that BIG percentage of
    that 33%!

    ref .10
It is IMNP and it doesn't show up on any of tracking systems. It really
must be small time. If I can't find it why the h... would I rely on LCW
to track it for me?! :^(

I have a fax of the information that LCW sent me. It is interesting
reading except the information tells me nothing about the company,
like location etc. When I pointed this out to the broker he tripped
over himself a bit. In fact he sent me two sets of information. One was
    dated June 14, 1993. The other July 22, 1993. The first has a high/low
    for 52 weeks of $9.25 - 5.00. The second has it as $11.00 - 3.50! For
two pieces of data only 5 weeks apart I was a little surprised at that
discrepancy. Of course there is the usual disclaimer about accuracy of
    information...! :^)

506.12"Buy ELGS"ASDG::WATSONDiscover AmericaTue Aug 10 1993 14:099
I got a call from these guys yesterday. I told him that I only do
funds. That satisfied him and the sales pitch ended. But I gave him
the same advice I'll give you now - Elgs - Electroglas.

Electroglas is a semiconductor equipment maker of wafer probers. They
went public last month at 16, dropped to 13 and now are around 20.
EG has large orders from IBM, INTEL, MOTOROLA and, yes, DIGITAL for
fab equipment. With Intel and Moto also building more fabs over $1B,
and big users of EG, I think this stock is worth a look. FWIW. Bob

Hmm - wish I'd seen this notesfile last year!

I am concluding 5 months of dealing with Wegard. My advice to
    others is "caveat emptor."

    My experience -

    . high pressure sales.
    . risky and/or expensive products.
. not interested in customer's financial goals.

    My learning -

    . read the prospectus.
    . read the 10K.
. validate what the broker says against the prospectus, 10K, trade mags,
      market quotes.
. buy low, sell high; don't buy otherwise!
    . a bottom-hugging stock can go lower... ;-(

I am losing 1/2 of my modest investment because I didn't stick to
my financial plan and I let the broker's visions of great potential
returns cloud the risks and costs associated with the investments.

I, too, have had problems with Wegard.

If you are in this boat, I urge you to contact John at GLRMAI::DUMONT
    (see .16).

"Fool me once, shame on Wegard. Fool me twice, shame on me."

The latest (10-Oct) issue of Forbes has an article about Wegard (page
    42). It's *NOT* positive!

If you have an account with Wegard, you *really* should read it, and
also send MAIL to John Dumont (GLRMAI::DUMONT).

This is my last day with Digital, but I can be reached next week on
the Internet at [email protected] . If that bounces, try:
