439.1 | HP vs DEC...is there a difference? | REGENT::CIAMPA | | Tue Apr 06 1993 10:01 | 11 |
| I've been printing TAXCUT returns for the past two weeks, but I've been
using an HP laser printer, and it prints just like the 1040 out of the
book. I don't see how the two printers could differ that much...why do
you want postscript??
Although I haven't had a problem with the Feds...the state returns print
out with a statement at the top of each page saying "Don't file this page".
has anyone experienced this??
thanks,

| I tried it with a PC over a pathwork. The batch file copy's a font file to lpt1.
and then the file.
The printer does not comeout with anything.

re: .1
What state? The TAXCUT docs say that some states only accept their
(the state's) official forms. Other states (like MA) will allow you to
use the TAXCUT forms, but only if they are printed on a laser printer.
Don't know why a MA form printed on a laser printer should get the
"Do not file..." message.
I'd like to get Postscript output too. Then I could transfer the PS
file to a system that has a laser printer and print my state forms
there. But probably the laser printer output from TAXCUT isn't really
PS anyway, right? Instead I bet they load custom fonts and print with
those.
What I'd really like is some way to make my HP500C look and act like a
laser printer to TAXCUT. Any hope? (Maybe I'll ask that in IBMPC-93
too.)

| I realize this info is too late now, but, for future refernce:
I too have experienced the TAXCUT (from Parsons, right?) printing
problems.
This is the first year that I used software to do my taxes, and I spent
more time trying to make it work than I did doing my taxes!
Anyway, the Federal version of TAXCUT does not use the Windows printing
capabilities, even though it is a Windows program. For some reason, a
very little variation between the HP emulation of my DEC printer
(DECLaser 1150) and a real HP Laserjet was brought out by the way
TAXCUT prints.
I ended up having to set my printer to its standard ANSI printer
emulation and print the forms that look typewritten (very ugly).
I wouldn't recommend this package for 1993 for that reason, unless they
fix the way their software prints forms.

439.5 | Oh yeah, and about "Do Not File Form" | BOSBEN::LASHER | VMS Partner -- Boston Sales Support | Wed May 12 1993 00:35 | 11 |
| The "Do not file this from" message is telling you that the particular
form is not acceptable by the Feds or your State.
Some states don't accept forms that are output by software packages.
Probably because if the SW doesn't print nice laser forms, the returns
look like crap and are hard to read.
Even states that accept them (Massachusetts) will not accept ALL of the
forms. My return didn't include any forms that were not acceptable,
although the impression I got was that you might not be able to file
some of the less common forms.
