386.0. "Canadian investor buying mutual funds in US." by DECWET::KARMALI () Fri Feb 12 1993 21:55
My father-in-law lives in Toronto, Canada. I convinced him to invest in
mutual funds. Since I invest in Twentieth Century Ultra fund and really
like Twentieth Century funds I was thinking if he could invest in ULTRA.
If he invests in the US and lives in Canada, would he have to pay taxes
in the US and in Canada?
Or does it make sense for him to send me monthly checks so that I can
invest it for him? I am aware of currency fluctuations and that I
would have to pay taxes in the 28% tax bracket.
Would it be better for him to invest in Canadian Mutual Funds?
If so, how can I get a list of mutual funds available to Canadians?

| I presume US and Canada have a tax treaty that prevents double
taxation.
