If this has been answered elsewhere I would appreciate a pointer. Can a regular person fax their tax return to the IRS? I can't believe places are charging $35.00 for the privilege of doing so. How legal are the faxed copies? Do I have to mail the originals too? If so where can I get the number to fax it too? Thnaks

I don't know about faxing, but I thought those services were submitting electronically, which I took to mean sending the data over the wire, so no data entry clerk at the IRS has to type the numbers into their computer. | |||||

Electronic filing with the IRS is rather rigidly controlled. For all the gruesome details, get: Pub 1345, Handbook for Electronic Filers of Individual Income Tax Returns (Tax Year 1992) and Pub 1346, Electronic Return File Specifications and Record Layouts for Individual Income Tax Returns (Tax Year 1992) Also, you have to apply ahead of time to actaully be one of these "filers of returns" on form 8633 "Application to Participate..." ...and so forth. Not for folks with weak stomachs... SteveSov |
