327.0. "Investment Newleter" by SUBWAY::SAMBAMURTY (Raja) Tue Dec 08 1992 15:25

    Has anyone had experience with The Professional Tape Reader ? I think
    this is published by Stan Weinstein, this guy appears on NBR every so
    often. I think he is some kind of technician but I am not sure about
    his record. Any info would be appreciated.

327.1Be careful about PTR!KYOA::LAZARUSDavid Lazarus @KYO,323-4353Wed Dec 09 1992 09:4423
    I subscribed to PTR for a short time during fall 1987 without good results.
    His recommendations are very difficult to follow,because he tends to cover
    himself for any eventuality. As one who got his newsletter and listened
    to his hotline in the weeks prior to the crash,it is amazing that Paul
    Kengas(sp) of NBR would have him as guest the night of the Oct 19,1987
    crash. Weinstein acted like he had safeguarded his readers but that
    is far from true.

    When I got home from work,the night of Black Monday,his newsletter was
    in the mailbox,so it was too late to act on his recommendations which
    were certainly not the clearcut advice of Marty Zweig or Elaine
    Garzarelli.

    I felt vindicated several years later when Hulbert showed the real
    results of newsletters and put PTR in the bottom 5. I will admit this
    guy is a knowledgeable technician with tons of indicators and
    statistics. It also helps that he is based in Fort Lauderdale,right
    next to PTR offices in Miami and has an insider relationship with
    Kengas which has immeasurably helped his business.

    A typical PTR recommendation is; Sell DEC if it goes below 31 but buy
    if it crosses 33 . Again,his newsletter may work for some people.

327.2Not so fast!SAHQ::ROSENKRANZRock with Gene & EddyWed Dec 09 1992 11:496
    In defense of Stan, the Wednesday before Black Monday, he put a special
    recording on his telephone hotline with appropriate warning of the
    impending trouble.

    Normally Stan only has one recording a week. It is quite unusual to put
    on a special one and was indicative of the unusual conditions.
327.3Compared to what?VMSDEV::HALLYBFish have no concept of fire.Wed Dec 09 1992 12:1911
    Stan is very telegenic and uses the media to maximum advantage.

    I recall a couple years ago when DEC had just sunk below 100 and IBM
    was lounging in the same area and Stan said, very emphatically:
    "Do Not Go Bottom-Fishing in these Stocks!". Good advice, no?

    But I don't subscribe to Stan's newsletter -- personally I find stock
    picking just isn't my game. But for those who do that sort of thing,
    you could do a lot worse.

    Hi

    The Investech market letter published by Jim Stack, I find to be very
    good with clear cut advice. Currently he is bullish and about
    60 % invested.

    I am not aware of his official long term track record...see Hurlbert
    for that. However, I find his information credible and recall him
    being disinvested at the time of the crash...Oct. 1987.

    Regards,  Jim
