AltaVista Internet Software Unveils New AltaVista Search Product Family
             for Comprehensive WEB-TO-Desktop Searching

...Next Generation Search Software Handles More Than 200
                     Different Document Types...

LITTLETON, Mass., May 6, 1997 -- AltaVista Internet Software, Inc.,
a subsidiary of Digital Equipment Corporation, today unveiled its
next generation of AltaVista Search software, extending information
retrieval to more information types and domains than ever before.
AltaVista Search now indexes more than 200 different file formats on
the World Wide Web, intranets, extranets, file servers and local PC
disks, including Microsoft Office 97, Adobe PDF and PostScript
documents. In addition, the AltaVista Search family now supports
Netscape and Internet Explorer email messages.

Along with enhancements to the current product set -- AltaVista
Search Intranet eXtension 97 and AltaVista Search Personal eXtension
97 -- AltaVista today announced a new member of the product family,
AltaVista Search Workgroup eXtension 97. This version of AltaVista
Search provides search and retrieval capabilities for information
stored on a variety of file servers, including NT file servers,
Novell file servers and LAN Manager file servers.

"The AltaVista Search product family represents a significant
breakthrough in information search and retrieval technology," said
Ilene H. Lang, president and CEO of AltaVista Internet Software,
Inc. "We've extended search capabilities far beyond Web page
indexing to accommodate hundreds of file types and data sources.
Combined with its broad expandability, AltaVista Search offers a
clear advantage to any business needing fast and comprehensive
access to information."

Complementing the announcement of the new AltaVista Search
products, AltaVista Internet Software, Inc., today announced a
technology and business agreement with Linguistic Technology for its
Exposi (tm) and English Wizard Web/Server (tm) products. These two
applications enhance the ability of AltaVista Search to meet
critical end-user issues of locating and browsing information stored
in client/server applications, data marts, data warehouses and
databases. Used in combination with AltaVista Search, they permit
users to search and retrieve information spanning multiple data
sources in a single search.

Exposi enables database administrators to publish database
information, including metadata to AltaVista Search by generating
HTML Web pages. English Wizard Web/Server makes it easy for any user
to browse database information by asking business questions in
everyday language. It then translates the natural language query
into SQL to retrieve information from the database. English Wizard
also turns the response into HTML so users can view results on a Web
browser.

About the AltaVista Search Product Family

The AltaVista Search product family uses the same super-spider
technology as the AltaVista Search Public Service to crawl
throughout all the Web servers in the enterprise, indexing every
word on every HTML page, every text document, and many popular
office-type documents. With the familiar AltaVista Search page on
any Web browser, users can search for all the Web pages and
hyperlinks that contain specified words or phrases. A listing of
results is presented in seconds, and each item in the listing is
hyperlinked directly to the Web page referenced.

AltaVista Search Intranet eXtension 97

Extremely scalable, AltaVista Search Intranet eXtension 97
crawls and indexes corporate intranets, extranets and selected World
Wide Web sites. HTML, text files and more than 200 other types of
file formats are indexed. New features include added support for PC
application formats (including office suites such as Microsoft
Office 97 and Adobe PDF and PostScript files), user customizable
query and results pages, and support for the Sun Solaris operating
environment.

AltaVista Search Intranet eXtension 97 runs on Windows NT
(Intel and Alpha), Digital UNIX v3.2 or later (Alpha) and Sun
Solaris v2.4 or later (SPARC). The products are expected to begin
shipping in June 1997.

AltaVista Search Workgroup eXtension 97

The newest member of the AltaVista Search 97 product family,
AltaVista Search Workgroup eXtension 97, provides search and
retrieval capabilities for information stored on file servers.
Connections between the Workgroup eXtension server and file servers
are not limited to TCP/IP; NT file servers, Novell file servers,
PATHWORKS file servers and LAN Manager file servers, among others,
can be indexed and searched.

AltaVista Search Workgroup eXtension 97 runs under Windows 95
and Windows NT 4.0 (workstation and server) operating systems. The
product is expected to ship in July 1997.

AltaVista Search Personal eXtension 97

AltaVista Search Personal eXtension 97 is a PC application for
both home-based and business users that provides search and
retrieval capabilities for more than 200 different file types stored
on the PC's hard disk, file servers, Microsoft Exchange servers and
e-mail clients. The product's expanded capabilities include added
support for desktop applications (including Microsoft Office 97,
Lotus SmartSuite and Corel PerfectOffice) and integration with
additional e-mail clients (including Internet Explorer Mail and
Netscape Mail.)

AltaVista Search Personal eXtension 97 runs under Windows 95
and Windows NT 4.0. It requires Netscape Navigator v2.0 or greater,
or Microsoft Internet Explorer v2.0 or greater Web browsers, and 12
MB RAM and 8 MB of disk space. The product is expected to ship in
June 1997.

AltaVista Search Developer's Kit 97

The AltaVista Search Developer's Kit, previously available only
for Digital UNIX, is now available for Windows NT (Intel and Alpha.)
This toolkit enables system integrators and developers to integrate
AltaVista Search 97 with structured and non-structured databases.
It includes a set of APIs to the AltaVista Search index C library,
full documentation and coding examples.
