MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. April 30 /PRNewswire/ via Individual Inc. -- Netscape
Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: NSCP) today announced an alliance with
leading providers of Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) tools and data
warehousing products. These vendors are working with Netscape to support a
core set of open standards that facilitate enterprise-scale deployment of
Web-enabled business intelligence systems. Centered on the Netscape ONE
open network environment, the standards include HTML, Java, JavaScript,
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Common Object Request Broker
Architecture (CORBA) and NSAPI.
Using these standards, developers are able to offer a new class of business
analysis applications that helps corporations strengthen their links with
customers, partners, suppliers and distributors across a common Internet
infrastructure. The first group of companies working with Netscape to
deliver Web-enabled OLAP and data warehousing products include Arbor
Software Corporation, Brio Technology, Business Objects, Cognos,
Information Advantage, Informix Software, MicroStrategy, Inc., Oracle
Corporation, PLATINUM technology, Prism Solutions, Inc. and Red Brick
Systems.
"Oracle, the market leader in data warehouse and OLAP implementation,
supports Netscape ONE strategy to further Web-enable these solutions."
We understand that the Web is critical in enabling technology that allows
the largest number of people within an organization to access the
information in their data warehouses," said Neil Mendelson, senior
director, data warehousing, Oracle Corp. "By supporting initiatives such as
Netscape ONE Oracle is strengthening our leadership position and increasing
value to our customers by extending data warehousing across the
enterprise."
"With their ability to help executives discern critical issues and
opportunities, business intelligence systems are poised to become the
command center for the Networked Enterprise," said Danny Shader, vice
president of industry and developer relations at Netscape. "We believe that
open, standards-based Web integration will bring new market opportunities
for these products and open additional markets for the integration of
Netscape clients and servers in the OLAP arena."
As information access becomes easier, businesses are generating a
tremendous quantity of data about their daily business transactions. To
fully capitalize on the value of this data, companies need tools to
efficiently extract information, interpret it in meaningful ways, and
present it in useful forms. OLAP products work with data warehouses to help
users view information across multiple dimensions. Because OLAP tools
"recognize" the relationships between data they have emerged as powerful
decision support mechanisms. The emergence of corporate Intranets and
Extranets now extends OLAP's reach to a much broader range of companies who
otherwise could not afford to build, deploy and manage sophisticated
warehouse solutions.
Netscape ONE is attractive to OLAP vendors because its inherent cross-
platform capabilities overcome the heterogeneous systems mix found in most
corporate settings. Furthermore, because Netscape's client software is
widely installed on corporate desktops, Netscape ONE-based solutions are
easier to implement and deploy.
"Customers have clearly recognized the effectiveness of using OLAP data as
the starting point for business intelligence activities -- the OLAP market
is soaring," said Alan Rottenberg, senior vice president, Business
Intelligence Tools at Cognos' . "Working side-by-side with Netscape, we
intend to continue driving the market by providing products that fully
integrate Internet capabilities."
"Netscape has identified and accelerated the trend to provide more users
greater access to quality data for analysis," said Paul Rodwick, director
of product management at Red Brick. "Red Brick Warehouse offers features
that naturally complement Netscape ONE: mass scalability; consistent,
extremely fast query response; and integrated data mining. Performance is
everything at Red Brick, and the combination of Red Brick Warehouse with
Netscape ONE promises users even faster performance."
The Netscape ONE environment is a standards-based platform for creating a
new generation of networked applications. Netscape ONE unifies the
standards of the Internet into a single platform for creating powerful,
robust applications. By relying on Netscape ONE to Web-enable their
applications, OLAP and data warehousing vendors can offer their customers
seamless interoperability, dramatic scalability, on-demand information
access, ease of use, central deployment and management, and the capacity to
deliver dynamic content--all within a global network environment.
