Description

The DIGITAL OpenVMS Data Mart is a complete solution set of data
warehousing tools and consulting services from DIGITAL. It is aimed at
DIGITAL users who want to apply data warehousing techniques to data located
on OpenVMS systems throughout their organization. It enables them to access
their operational or historical data on multiple systems -- including
non-OpenVMS -- and consolidate them on a Data Mart. The accessing and
formatting of the data is done through a Windows NT server acting as the
metadata repository or "extraction manager."

The OpenVMS Data Mart comprises the following:

   * ISG Navigator software, to establish an ODBC connection to the data on
OpenVMS systems using OLE DB connectivity
   * Informatica PowerMart software to extract and format the data
   * Business Objects software to enable end-user knowledge workers to
manage their queries and arrange the presentation of the data
   * Up to six weeks of consulting from DIGITAL for the design,
installation, and sign-over of the customized Data Mart

The OpenVMS Data Mart announcement is part of Wave 4 of the Affinity
Program. It combines the benefits of front-end tools that run on Windows
and Windows NT systems in conjunction with OpenVMS data sources that
deliver high availability, scalability, and security.

Benefits

   * DIGITAL product users apply data warehousing to valuable data on their
     OpenVMS systems
   * OpenVMS Data Mart is customized to specific business needs with the
installation and tuning done by DIGITAL professionals
   * OpenVMS Data Mart is implemented in a short timeframe (5 to 6 weeks)
   * OpenVMS Data Mart is priced affordably for a departmental budget
   * All OpenVMS Data Mart software required, from the end user to the
source data, is included -- Users receive a Data Mart with components
     that have been tested together
   * Very large amounts of source data on OpenVMS systems are highly
available to the data repository and data mart -- Users can derive
more value from operational data, sales histories, customer profiles,
     or other historical data
   * Users derive the benefits of reduced inventory costs, better target
marketing, better informed capital decisions, better return on assets,
     and improved competitive edge
   * Users access their data from a Windows or Windows NT environment while
maintaining the high availability, security, and scalability features
of the OpenVMS back end server

Positioning

The OpenVMS Data Mart shares similar components with the DIGITAL Data Mart
announced in late 1996. The primary difference is that the OpenVMS Data
Mart uses the capabilities of ISG Navigator software to access databases on
OpenVMS systems through OLE DB, while the DIGITAL Data Mart is configured
on a Windows NT server using Microsoft SQL Server as its localized
database.

ISG Navigator software provides state-of-the-art access to operational and
legacy data from desktop PCs in client/server and intranet environments. It
provides distributed, high performance access to RMS, Oracle Rdb, Oracle7,
SYBASE, and other data sources. It presents two- or three-tier and
Internet/intranet applications with a single interface to OpenVMS servers.
It enables a PC client to connect to multiple data sources on multiple
servers, using either dedicated networks or the Internet. For additional
information on the ISG Navigator product, refer to the "ISG Navigator V1.0"
article in this issue. For more information on the use of ISG Navigator on
the Internet, refer to the "Using ISG Navigator to Access OpenVMS Data Over
the Web from Windows NT" article in this issue.

Selling information

The successful sale and installation of this solution set depends heavily
on the involvement of Network and Systems Integration Services (NSIS). It
should be sold in conjunction with members of the Information Management
Practice of NSIS or through consultation with them. The successful
installation of an OpenVMS Data Mart will strengthen your account control
and can lead to your involvement in selling a larger enterprise-wide Data
Warehouse.

Customers with data on OpenVMS systems are typically found in the areas of
health care, banking, finance, telecommunications, retail, and insurance.
Specific knowledge of your accounts will lead you to those customers with
valuable data distributed on several OpenVMS systems throughout the
organization

The OpenVMS Data Mart is intended as a proof-of-concept approach to data
warehousing. In-depth business analysis and business process reengineering
are outside the scope of this solution set. (The customer's business issue
that will be addressed should already have been identified, as well as the
sources for the data that will be used to populate the data mart.)

Availability and ordering

The OpenVMS Data Mart is available May 19, 1997, from DIGITAL and its
business partners.
 Order No. Description U.S. List
 QS-ODMA9-CP OpenVMS Data Mart $104,500

Services

Support services are provided by the DIGITAL Network and Systems
Integration Services Group. The primary goal of the service -- part of the
solution -- is to implement a single, subject-specific decision support
system. This is accomplished by installing and configuring an operational
data mart based on a specific business purpose. The duration of the onsite
consulting should not exceed 30 business days. If further consulting
assistance is needed, a Customized Consulting Service (QS-CPPA9-5Z) can be
ordered.

   * The service activities included in this solution set typically include
     the following:
        o Engagement kickoff
        o Meet with management sponsor
        o Design phase
o Review goals and objectives of this OpenVMS Data Mart service

o Document configuration issues and configure server hardware
        o Database software installation

Components

Extraction and transformation of data -- Informatica PowerMart Suite

This suite of integrated client/server software tools builds, deploys, and
manages the enterprise-scaleable data mart. These tools enable rapid
development; moreover, their unique architecture and multi-thread
capabilities allow them to scale up to support very large data volumes and
a very large user community.

Decision support at the desktop -- Business Objects

This set of tools provides business users with a powerful, easy-to-use
Microsoft Office-style interface to information stored in the Data Mart
with integrated query, reporting, and online analytical processing
capabilities.

ODBC access using Microsoft OLE DB connectivity -- ISG Navigator

Although the OpenVMS Data Mart is targeted primarily at the OpenVMS
installed base, most users will have a heterogeneous environment. The ISG
Navigator software supports the following platforms as data sources:

   * OpenVMS (VAX and Alpha)
   * DIGITAL UNIX
   * Windows NT (Intel and Alpha)
   * Windows 95
   * IBM (MVS and AIX)
