Thinking Machines Aligns with Red Brick to Provide Customer Discovery
Solutions Darwin Will Help Red Brick Customers Improve Return on Data
Warehousing Investment

Date: Thursday, April 10, 1997
Source: PR Newswire
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

BEDFORD, Mass., April 9 /PRNewswire/ via Individual Inc. -- Thinking
Machines Corporation, a leading provider of data mining-based Customer
Discovery software and services, today announced a partnership with Red
Brick Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: REDB), a leading provider of relational
database products and service for data warehouse applications.

Darwin, the highly scalable, high-end data mining software from Thinking
Machines, will provide Red Brick customers with sophisticated data mining
algorithms, including decision trees, neural networks, genetic algorithms,
and memory-based reasoning. Each of these algorithms has been implemented
using proprietary parallel processing techniques, taking full advantage of
Thinking Machines' expertise as a former maker of massively parallel
supercomputers. The result is an ability to build more accurate models
faster and churn through large volumes of data at a fraction of the time
required by sequential solutions. In addition, Darwin enables customers to
build multiple models simultaneously. Combined, these capabilities
dramatically speed up the process of finding the optimal model for a
particular business problem.

Darwin provides a powerful solution for Red Brick customers that design
large, high-performance client/server relational database management
systems specifically for data mart and data warehousing applications. With
Darwin, the users will be able to delve into the vast amounts of
information stored in their data warehouses and data marts to discover
hidden patterns, trends and correlations that will, in turn, enable them to
make predictions that solve business problems.

"Our alliance with Red Brick will enable customers with any size data
warehouse to use the most appropriate data mining solution for their
needs," said Robert L. Doretti, president and CEO of Thinking Machines. "In
addition, Darwin's underlying technology will enable companies to learn
more about their customers and therefore, build rifle-shot strategies to
attract and retain them."

"It makes a lot of sense to me that these two vendors would work closely
together. Integrating Darwin with Red Brick warehousing couples a parallel
data mining tool with a parallel warehouse DBMS, enabling users to
effectively mine large amounts of data," said Herb Edelstein, president of
Two Crows Corporation. "It also adds additional algorithms so that Red
Brick customers can solve a wider range of data mining problems."

Founded in 1983, Thinking Machines Corporation revolutionized high-
performance computing with its parallel processing technology. Today,
Thinking Machines produces, markets and sells data mining-based Customer
Discovery software and services. With offices worldwide, Thinking Machines
is headquartered in Bedford, Mass., USA. Thinking Machines can be reached
on the World Wide Web at http://www.think.com.

Red Brick Systems, Inc., based in Los Gatos, Calif., specializes in data
warehouse software products used for fast, accurate, and confident business
decision-making on large client/server databases, up to terabytes in size
with hundreds of millions to billions of records Information about Red
Brick is available on the World Wide Web at http://www.redbrick.com.
