Wal-Mart partners with NCR to triple size of its Data Warehouse; gains
competitive edge with new customer preferences data

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: Tuesday, February 11, 1997
Source: Business Wire
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

DAYTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. --

Giant retailer's data warehouse to grow to 24 terabytes; order

includes Teredata RDBMS and 5100M WorldMark Servers

Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, has again partnered with NCR, the
world leader in data warehousing, to dramatically increase the size and
information analysis capabilities of its data warehouse by adding new
customer preferences data.

As part of the contract, the computer maker will supply one new NCR
WorldMark(TM) 5100M massively parallel processing (MPP) server and upgrade
a second installed NCR 5100M from 32 to 96 nodes. The contract also covers
NCR professional services, including database design, data transformation
and data management, as well as maintenance.

The two WorldMark 5100M servers -- running NCR's Teredata(TM) relational
database management system (RDBMS) -- will triple the size of Wal-Mart's
existing data warehouse from 7.5 terabytes to over 24 terabytes.

With the increased capacity, Wal-Mart retains its position of having the
`world's largest commercial data warehouse,' with more than 30 applications
running on the system and handling as many as 50,000 queries in one week.

"This expansion is part of Wal-Mart's drive to deliver what its customers
want: the right item, at the right store, at the right time and at the
right price," said Randy Mott, senior vice president and chief information
officer for Wal-Mart. "It's the ultimate form of customer service."

"Our business strategy depends on detailed data at every level," Mott
explained. "Every cost, every line item is carefully analyzed, enabling
better merchandising decisions to be made on a daily basis. It is the
foundation for maintaining Wal-Mart's competitive edge and its continuing
success in providing everyday low prices and superior customer
satisfaction."

That competitive edge and commitment to customer satisfaction is
underscored by the unique aspects in Wal-Mart's implementation. For
example, although Wal-Mart's data warehouse incorporates information on a
nationwide basis, that information can be tailored by store to allow
merchandise buyers to gain insight into local purchasing patterns.

"Our extended partnership with Wal-Mart is another significant milestone
for NCR," said Bill Eisenman, senior vice president of NCR's Computer
Systems Group. "It underscores NCR's commitment to customer service -- as
it does Wal-Mart's -- and NCR's expertise in building very large data
warehouses to support complex customer information and decision-support
systems."

Information stored in the data warehouse -- which is collected from the
retailer's 2,900 stores -- will be used to enhance Wal-Mart's decision
support system, particularly for the retailer's rapidly growing chain of
Supercenters and Wal-Mart International units. Using the 65 weeks of data
kept by item/by store/by day, Wal-Mart buyers and vendors can query and
analyze information to make informed decisions on replenishment, look at
customer buying trends around the world, analyze seasonal buying trends,
make mark-down decisions, and react to merchandise volume and movement at
any time.

The NCR WorldMark servers will be installed and upgraded by mid-97. One
system is configured with 32 nodes, 256 Pentium Pro 200 processors and 8
terabytes of storage; the second server will be upgraded to 96 nodes, 768
Pentium Pro 200 processors and 16 terabytes of storage.

About NCR's Solutions

NCR's large-scale data warehousing solutions consist of the WorldMark 5100M

Date: Tuesday, May 6, 1997
Source: Business Wire
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

DAYTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- - Leveraging Its Data
Warehouse Expertise, NCR Targets Solving Business Problems in Retail,
Financial and Communications Industries -

Taking the benefits of data warehousing to the next level, NCR today laid
out its data mining roadmap and announced a portfolio of products,
services, and partners to help companies in a variety of industries address
business problems like customer retention and demand forecasting.

The NCR Data Mining offerings strongly leverage NCR's experience gained in
the company's 14 years of building highly scalable data warehouses, having
built more than 550 data warehouses worldwide. The new offerings are part
of a roll out that extends until the summer of 1997.

"Leveraging the information in a company's data warehouse is what data
mining is all about," said Mark Hurd, vice president of Marketing for NCR's

NCR Endorses Microsoft BackOffice Enterprise Edition by Showcasing its
Leadership in High Availability and Data Warehousing at Microsoft's
Scalability Day

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: Wednesday, May 21, 1997
Source: Business Wire
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- NCR Corp. strengthened its
market leadership position within the high availability computing and data
warehouse markets with a series of demonstrations that incorporate support
for Microsoft's newly announced BackOffice Enterprise Edition at
Microsoft's Scalability Day, held here today.

The event, organized by Microsoft, and supported by partner companies like
NCR, served to provide further evidence of NT's ability to perform and
scale as an enterprise-wide network operating system.

"NCR's commitment to Windows NT for the enterprise is long- standing,
having been involved in its initial development and in integrating the
network operating system into highly effective computing solutions for our
customers," said Mark Hurd, vice president of Marketing for NCR's Computer
Systems Group. "So it's no accident that NCR has 67 percent market share of
NT-based systems greater than $50,000, as determined by IDC. We intend to
maintain this leadership position by continuing to invest and collaborate
with Microsoft and offer even higher scalability, reliability, and
performance to our customers with Windows NT Server Enterprise Edition and
SQL Server Enterprise Edition."

At Scalability Day, the company offered three demonstrations which
presented its ability to embrace and extend Microsoft's Windows NT
Enterprise Edition into its market-leading NCR Scalable Data Warehouse and
High Availability Transaction Processing (HATP) computing solutions.

The first dealt with the NCR WorldMark 4300, a mid-range Pentium Pro server
designed to enhance Windows NT Server scalability. The system was set up as
a data mart and transaction server. Running NCR TOP END, the company's
multi-faceted transaction broker middleware, the WorldMark 4300 launched a
transaction from the Microsoft ActiveX platform into a heterogeneous
enterprise computing environment, consisting of several operating systems,
including UNIX and MVS. TOP END enhances the Windows NT Server Enterprise
Edition by extending the ActiveX and Microsoft Transaction Server
environments into legacy environments that exist within the enterprise.
"This showed how easily and effectively our WorldMark 4300, running Windows
NT and utilizing NCR TOP END middleware, can handle a situation where few
things match perfectly yet need to work in concert," Hurd said.

The second showcase reinforced NCR's close collaboration with Microsoft,
which is delivering best-in-class, end-to-end scalability and price
performance for data marts and data warehousing through the linking of
NCR's Teradata relational database management system (RDBMS) and
Microsoft's SQL Server Enterprise Edition. It showed the launching of a
query through Microsoft Internet Information Server to a local SQL Server
decision support system. When it is determined that a portion of the
response resides within the enterprise data warehouse another query is
generated, using ActiveX components, and is directed to the
Teradata-managed data warehouse. The results are combined and then used to
produce an active Web page. As an active member of Microsoft's Alliance for
Data Warehousing, NCR continues to invest in the integration of SQL Server
as a key data component of its market leading Scalable Data Warehouse
environment. NCR is also migrating its data warehouse Teradata platform to
the Windows NT Enterprise Edition, providing further evidence about NCR's
confidence in Microsoft's platforms ability to scale.

The aforementioned demonstrations leverage the use of EMC and Symbios disk
array technology. EMC and Symbios are partners with NCR in delivering
enterprise class solutions.

A third demonstration of NCR performance and reliability was an Automated
Teller Machine (ATM) front end system challenged to handle the equivalent
of 1 billion transactions in a 24 hour period. This demonstration uniquely
positions NCR as a vendor that is not only able to offer data
management/decision support solutions designed around scaleable Microsoft
technologies, but also offers platforms to capture the data through
platforms such as NCR's industry leading ATM's and Point of Sale devices.

NCR also highlighted a comprehensive set of service offers to help
customers plan, build and manage solutions utilizing Microsoft technology.
As a global Authorized Support Center for Microsoft products and leveraging
worldwide consulting capabilities, NCR provides a number of service offers
in the areas of architecture and design, implementation and support.

NCR and Microsoft have worked closely together on the development and
advancement of NT for several years. Today, NCR has dedicated NT
engineering resources at Microsoft, in Redmond, WA, and NCR's WorldMark
production center, in Columbia, SC, and, the Teradata development
headquarters, in San Diego, CA. Joint product development, integration
testing and benchmarking of integrated NCR and Microsoft technologies are
performed at these facilities. These organizations have already embraced
the Enterprise Editions for Windows NT Server and SQL Server.

"Going forward, NCR will continue to lead in the enterprise area by working
closely with Microsoft and addressing key requirements such as scalability,
performance, high availability, transaction processing middleware, Internet
services, and data warehousing," Hurd noted.

NCR WorldMark 4300

The NCR WorldMark 4300 server is currently available in a four processor
version and will scale to eight Pentium Pro processors in one cabinet with
the release of NCR's innovative OctaSCALE architecture. OctaSCALE leverages
Intel's Standard High Volume (SHV) server boards to create a
high-performance system out of two four processor Intel boards. While fully
compliant with Intel's Multiprocessing Specification, NCR's OctaSCALE
implementation eliminates the overhead associated with other solutions that
use an interconnect to cluster together two or more boards.

The NCR WorldMark 4300 system supports hot pluggable disks and power
supplies, redundant fans and power supplies, a dedicated service modem for
remote management, an uninterruptible power supply with full power fail
recovery, and an integrated, hot pluggable server manager processor.

NCR TOP END

NCR TOP END is a robust middleware that offers a scaleable, message-passing
engine and distributed-application administration tools for successfully
deploying mission-critical applications across an enterprise. Using remote
Java or ActiveX-enabled clients, the newly enhanced TOP END software
provides instant linkages -- over the Internet and intranets -- to
customers' existing applications or business objects, such as on-line
inventory queries by suppliers or customer profile information requests.
Other NCR Enterprise NT Value Adds

NCR's LifeKeeper software was the first Windows NT failover and clustering
offering available in the industry. Since then, LifeKeeper has continued to
add to the high availability functionality that LifeKeeper offers while
embracing Microsoft Cluster Server, code-named "Wolfpack" by becoming an
Early Adopter of the technology.

NCR's SMP Utilization Manager is an enterprise class software tool that
allows multiple applications to run on multiprocessing Windows NT servers
with greater efficiency. Using the tool, for example, three applications
can be run on a 16 processor Windows NT server. Each application is
assigned to multiple processors, allowing for full utilization of the
system. NCR and Microsoft released a white paper that details how a
WorldMark 4300 with SMP Utilization Manager can enhance the scalability of
Microsoft Exchange.
