PALO ALTO, Calif.,--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- Hewlett-Packard
Company and Informix Software, Inc. today announced TPC-D results that
represent the fastest decision-support-system (DSS) numbers to date. The HP
9000 Enterprise Parallel Server (EPS) and INFORMIX-Extended Parallel Server
(XPS) system delivered 70 percent more performance than the next-closest
competitive offering, with 25 percent fewer central processing units (CPUs)
and better price performance. HP and Informix also loaded the information
and completed the entire query benchmark four hours before the next-closest
competitor had even completed the loading phase. These DDS numbers
represent an enormous time and cost savings for data-warehousing customers.
The HP 9000 EPS Model 22, powered by 48 PA-8000 CPUs, with INFORMIX-OnLine
Extended Parallel Server (XPS) achieved record-breaking performance of
3,416.4 QppD with the leading price/performance of $3,007 $/QphD at 300GB.
These results translate into real-world performance benefits for
data-warehousing customers who rely on the speed and scalability of their
data warehouses to maintain a competitive advantage in their industries.
According to the META Group 1997 Data Warehouse Survey, HP is the leader in
data warehousing for the second year in a row. The combination of HP's
leadership and the HP/Informix results will continue to define HP as the
data-warehouse solution platform.
"While it's true benchmarks are achieved in a controlled setting, they are
valuable for comparison shopping," said Doug Lynn, senior research analyst
at META Group, based in Stamford, Conn. "The benchmark HP achieved with its
EPS22 positions HP as one of the leading data-warehouse platforms."
According to Informix, the TPC-D benchmark also reinforces Informix's
performance and scalability leadership in data warehousing. Typically, TPC
benchmark results vary only 1 percent to 10 percent from vendor to vendor.
Informix's XPS high-end database not only beat its nearest competitor with
more than 70 percent better performance, but also demonstrated outstanding
load scalability by loading the data in half the time it took the
competitive offering.
TPC-D benchmarks are designed to provide customers with a method to
evaluate systems under typical processing loads for decision-support and
data-warehousing applications. The TPC-D benchmark is an industry-standard
benchmark used to represent relative performance for a suite of 17
real-world decision-support queries. The Transaction Processing Performance
Council is an independent organization formed by contributing member
companies across the computer industry.
The 300GB TPC-D benchmark on the HP/Informix system is equivalent to three
times HP's own enterprisewide sales and marketing data warehouse. This HP
warehouse maintains five years of sales records for more than $130 billion
in orders on 480,000 products.
HP AND INFORMIX MAKE CLEAN SWEEP WITH TPC-D BENCHMARK
HP's EPS22 and Informix's XPS 300GB TPC-D result delivers more than twice
the performance of NCR's 5100M and uses one-third of the CPUs while
providing a 3x improvement in price/performance. Compared to IBM's RS/6000,
the HP and Informix solution provides 2.5x the performance and uses less
than one-half the CPUs while providing more than a 3x improvement in
price/performance. The 3x price/performance improvement offered by the HP
and Informix solution may represent a total cost savings of up to several
millions of dollars.

"With this benchmark, HP and Informix have leapt past competitors'
2,000-level benchmarks to give customers superior performance for the most
demanding data-warehousing and decision-support applications," said Carol
G. Mills, general manager for HP's Enterprise Systems Division. "This
result illustrates the performance scalability inherent in our EPS
offering. Given our future EPS product roadmap, we could potentially
provide as much as a 20x DSS performance increase by the year 2000."
DELIVERING SUPERIOR DECISION-SUPPORT PLATFORMS
HP is a world-class solutions provider for implementing and managing
enterprisewide data warehouses. Its unmatched data-warehouse consulting
methodology and integration services ensure successful implementation of
the data warehouse. HP has unique partnerships with best-in-class DSS
systems running on HP 9000 Enterprise Servers. Informix is a recognized
data-warehouse leader in providing customers with complete data-warehouse
solutions that include industry-leading, high-performance database servers;
relational OLAP technology; prototyping centers called Information
Superstores; and best-of-breed partner solutions.
"The benchmark simply reinforces Informix's, and, specifically, OnLine
XPS's, performance leadership in running large, business-critical
applications," said Tim Shetler, vice president of product management at
Informix Software, Inc. "This benchmark was completed in record time with
members of our Oregon development lab to produce a result more than 70
percent faster than Sun announced last week (see chart on page 3).
Customers select Informix because we deliver the fastest, most scalable
database capability to give them the information they require to stay ahead
of their competitors."
The HP and Informix relationship was established in 1980 to exploit and
integrate the companies' complementary technologies -- HP's
industry-leading client/server-based architecture with Informix's
high-performance parallel-processing database -- to meet customers' needs.
