GUILDFORD, SURREY, ENGLAND, 1997 FEB 7 (NB) via Individual Inc. -- By Steve
Gold. SPSS has unveiled SPSS 7.5, the latest edition of its data mining and
statistical analysis package. According to the company, the revised edition
enhances the software's ease of use and statistical feature set.

Company officials claim that the data mining utility is now the most
advanced analytical software available for Windows 95 and Windows NT users.
The package is claimed to provide core statistical procedures suitable for
those who traditionally use spreadsheets for data analysis.

According to the company, a new tutorial features enable non- statisticians
to carry out data mining and to interpret the results correctly. For
experienced users, the company claims, SPSS has developed a new scripting
language in v7.5 that allows the customization and automation of routine
tasks. Enhanced statistical procedures, such as General Linear Modelling,
have also been added.

"SPSS Base now provides even better value for customers who only use core
statistical procedures," explained Steve Barr, SPSS' marketing manager.

According to Barr, popular features, such as factor and cluster analysis,
have been moved to the Base package from other modules, "so it now provides
all the functions for most people's data analysis needs."

"Other SPSS modules, such as SPSS Professional Statistics, provide
experienced users with enhanced options such as an extensive non- linear
regression procedure," he said. "Serious statisticians can carry out
complex data mining analysis in a Windows environment."

The main additions to the latest version include an ODBC (open database
connectivity) query wizard to link databases or data warehouses; an on-line
statistical advisor to determine which procedure to use and how to
interpret the results; an expanded "what's this?" help system to open data
mining to non-statisticians; the ability to save results as text; and easy
connection to the Internet with the ability to save results in JPEG (joint
motion picture entertainments group) or HTML (hyper text markup language)
format.

According to the company, SPSS version 7.5 has more flexibility and greater
customization in specifying, analysing and displaying data drawn from ODBC
databases and data warehouses. SPSS is billed as going beyond describing
what has happened to explaining why. By calculating the complex links
between events, the company claims that its software builds a clear picture
of the organization's environment.

The new version also includes a new scripting language, written in C++,
which allows organisations to automate common tasks, such as posting
complex analysis onto the corporate Intranet. SPSS 7.5 can be integrated
with Windows as part of the menu bar, providing users with powerful
analysis tools on a familiar environment.

SPSS 7.5 system recommendations include an 80486-based PC; 12 megabytes
(MB) of RAM; 35 MB of storage space; Microsoft Windows 95 or NT 3.51/NT
4.0; a VGA monitor; and a mouse or pointing device. Pricing depends on site
licensing conditions.
