critical addition to Oracle's Alliance Program and will provide their
customers with a simple, state-of-the-art solution to the difficult task of
extracting and transforming operational data for use in data warehouse
solutions."

"We are pleased with the opportunity to add VMARK and its DataStage product

VMARK Software's Vertical Warehouse Initiative delivers turnkey,
application-centric, data warehouse solutions

WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. --

Packaged application providers and systems integrators spearhead

first-of-kind worldwide program to extend packaged

client/server applications with integrated

data warehouse capability

VMARK Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:VMRK), one of the world's leading
client/server software companies, today announced its Vertical Warehouse
Initiative to address the rapidly growing requirement to incorporate data
contained in the databases of packaged software applications in corporate
data marts and warehouses.

As part of today's announcement, VMARK introduced the first group of
fifteen members in the Vertical Warehouse Initiative. VMARK expects the
number of members in the Initiative to increase to more than 50 by year's
end.

Pioneered by VMARK, the Vertical Warehouse will be delivered through
application providers and systems integrators who will integrate data
warehouse, data extraction and transformation, and business intelligence
functionality with application packages resulting in a single solution that
can be implemented quickly and cost-effectively.

A New, Fully Integrated Way to Deliver Business Information

"The widespread adoption of client/server applications packages reflects a
growing trend for organizations to buy solutions rather than build them,"
said Henry Morris, a research director at International Data Corp., a
Framingham, Mass.-based industry research firm. "By extending packaged
applications with data warehouse add-on modules, resellers enhance the
value of their solution and improve their competitive position. VMARK's
Vertical Warehouse Initiative will help these vendors deal with the
difficult job of transforming and mapping application data into the target
data warehouse geared to specific customer requirements."

"The Vertical Warehouse Initiative is a more efficient way to deliver data
warehouse solutions so companies can immediately begin to derive the
benefits of improved decision making," said Peter L. Fiore, executive vice
president and general manager of VMARK's data warehouse division. "Up until
now, end-users had to deal with the very difficult problem of understanding
the data definitions used by application vendors before they could include
those data sources in a data warehouse. DataStage was designed to enable
application vendors to package their offering with an industry-specific
data model, transformation rules, business intelligence tools, and
value-added consulting. This approach to delivering data warehouses
benefits both the reseller and end-user through dramatically lower costs
and shorter implementations, yielding a significantly better return on
investment." Peter Fiore concluded.

Resellers Praise DataStage's Reusable, Component-based Architecture

Among the resellers participating in the Vertical Warehouse Initiative is
systems integrator Zyga Corporation, Basking Ridge, N.J.

Zyga provides information systems consulting and services to a range of
commercial and industrial companies nationwide, including Fortune 50
businesses. Its Component Engineering Methodology was cited by the Gartner
Group as the most advanced commercial methodology available for software
reuse. "We joined VMARK's Vertical Warehouse Initiative because DataStage
provides us with a reusable, component-based technology that supports our
capability to rapidly deliver vertical data warehouse solutions to our
customers," said David Little, director of sales and marketing at Zyga.
"The issues of reusability and speed of implementation provided by
DataStage are important because they allow us to concentrate on delivering
the high-value industry-specific knowledge our customers need to drive
their businesses."

Also participating in the Initiative is Quantra Corporation, Northbrook,
Illinois, a leading provider of investment management software for real
estate, mortgages, and securities. "DataStage is the data warehouse
workhorse we needed to compliment the applications we were developing and
deploying for our customers," noted Mike Snow, chief technology officer at
Quantra. "Its component-based architecture permits us to create data
warehouse templates that we can reuse as vertical frameworks for many of
our customers. This reduces our cost and speeds delivery of our products,
which are customized for each user. We also plan to bundle DataStage with
our own commercial real estate management application, and offer it as a
fully integrated application-specific information system."

According to the Data Warehousing Institute, the industry is moving rapidly
to the integration of applications and data warehouses as a total business
solution. "Driven by the need to provide customers with focused
business-oriented solutions, packaged application vendors will begin to
integrate data warehouse functionality into their core products as part of
the standard application sales process," noted Richard Rist of The Data
Warehousing Institute, Bethesda, Maryland. "1997 will be the year the
application-specific warehouse emerges as a new approach to rapidly and
cost-effectively delivering meaningful business benefits."

The other organizations participating in initial launch of the Vertical
Warehouse Initiative are: Trilogy Computers, United Kingdom; James River
Technical, Inc., Mechanicsville, VA; IT Resources; Logicil, Montreal,
Canada; Datacom Technology Group, Inc., New York, NY; Diversified Computer
Systems, Atlanta, GA; and TAG Consulting, Enchain, CA; GIE Symphone,
France; Alternative, France; and Consort, France.

Data Warehousing Made Easy: Plug-in Stages and Reusable Components

VMARK's DataStage simplifies the building of data warehouses by automating
the most critical tasks in the data warehouse process - the extraction,
transformation, and cleansing of data located in multiple source databases
and applications. According to the Data Warehouse Institute, these tasks
represent the most difficult and time-consuming elements of creating a
warehouse, with "70 to 80 percent of time and dollars spent on a data
warehouse devoted to transformation."

DataStage allows the data extraction and transformation process to be
visually defined by linking together reusable software components called
"stages". Stages perform the basic processing steps associated with data
extraction, transformation, and integration. Application or vertical market
specific functionality can be easily added to DataStage with plug-in
stages. These plug-ins can be written in any language capable of creating a
Microsoft Windows compliant DLL and will be offered by VMARK as well as
certified third-party providers. Because it offers a building block
approach to creating a visual, process-oriented model of this process.

DataStage reduces the cost, time, and resources required to design and
maintain fully-scaleable warehouses.

Pricing and Availability

DataStage began shipping in January to customers and resellers. End user
list prices start at approximately $37,500 (US).
