IBM Teams With Arbor Software To Enter Analytical Processing Software
Arena; Helping Companies Gain Competitive Advantage With Enterprise-Wide
Business Intelligence Solutions

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: Tuesday, February 25, 1997
Source: Business Wire
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- IBM (NYSE:IBM)
and Arbor Software Corporation (NASDAQ:ARSW) today announced they have
entered into a development agreement designed to help customers in a
networked environment make faster and more informed business decisions.

The companies will integrate technology from Arbor Software directly with
IBM's industry-leading DB2(i) and other relational database software to
create a new OLAP (on-line analytical processing) offering.

This new product, called the IBM DB2 OLAP server, leverages Arbor
Software's Essbase OLAP Engine to provide scalable, open and flexible
solutions for a wide range of business reporting, analysis and planning
applications across the enterprise. In addition, the IBM DB2 OLAP server
allows networked clients to access multidimensional data through Web
browsers, bringing powerful analytics to the World Wide Web.

"This new server is exciting because it allows us to implement a wide range
of analytical applications directly against our data stored in DB2," said
Denny Thiel, vice president of development at Fred Meyer, a major retail
chain. "The combination of IBM's DB2 OLAP server and Arbor Essbase will
give us compatible systems which address the widest range of reporting,
analysis and planning applications."

The IBM DB2 OLAP server, the newest member of IBM's business intelligence
family, features the same capabilities as those of an Arbor Essbase OLAP
server, including sophisticated OLAP calculations, comprehensive OLAP
navigation features, complex query support and multi-user read/write
functionality. Arbor Essbase was recently awarded the National Software
Testing Lab's (NSTL) Four Star "Recommended" rating over Oracle Express
Server in an extensive, head-to-head OLAP server evaluation which praised
Essbase for superior usability, versatility and ease of use.

"The IBM and Arbor partnership is a fast way for each company to gain
access to critical skills and technology," said Aaron Zornes, executive
vice president and director, Application Delivery Strategies Service, META
Group. "Speed to market and large-scale distribution are critical to market
success and this combination offers the value of these benefits to both
companies."

The open, cross-platform IBM DB2 OLAP server will analyze data stored in
IBM's DB2 family, including the newly announced DB2 Universal Database, DB2
for OS/400(i) and DB2 for MVS(i), and other relational database products.
It is designed to operate on both IBM and non-IBM platforms, including
AIX(i), OS/2(i), OS/400, Windows NT, HP-UX and Sun Solaris.

"IBM is recognized as a leader in all segments of the business intelligence
marketplace," said Janet Perna, general manager, data management, IBM
Software Solutions. "We recognize the value on-line analytical processing
brings to our customers for financial and market analysis and for
conducting electronic business. Teaming with Arbor Software adds a
comprehensive OLAP server to IBM's power-packed lineup of data mart, data
warehousing and information mining solutions."

"Arbor Software is focused on providing analytical processing solutions for
the enterprise," said James Dorrian, Arbor's chairman and chief executive
officer. "Our agreement with IBM allows us to produce and deliver an OLAP
server that stores data in standard relational databases and is compatible
with Arbor Essbase. This combination addresses the unique needs of a new
set of large-scale data warehousing applications and expands the use of
Arbor's OLAP technology across the enterprise."

Enabling Applications and Tools

By integrating Arbor's Essbase OLAP engine, IBM can leverage the more than
100 Essbase-Ready tools, applications and service partners who have

Arbor Software ships Arbor Essbase OLAP server version 4.1; new version
enables customers to deploy adaptable data marts; expands platform support
for Arbor Essbase Web gateway

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: Thursday, April 17, 1997
Source: Business Wire
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- Arbor Software
Corporation, a leading provider of enterprise software for management
reporting, analysis and planning, today announced the immediate
availability of the Arbor Essbase OLAP (on-line analytical processing)
Server version 4.1.

The new version of Arbor Essbase delivers increased flexibility, more
powerful querying capability, simplified application development and
additional platform support.

"Arbor Essbase 4.1 extends our lead in delivering scalable, open,
high-performance solutions to the enterprise OLAP market," said Jim
Dorrian, Arbor's chairman and chief executive officer. "Our unique
capabilities for delivering adaptable OLAP data marts enable our customers
to respond quickly to changing business conditions and maximize competitive
advantage."

Arbor Essbase 4.1 combines powerful new features to support OLAP
applications with thousands of users accessing hundreds of gigabytes of
data:

Adaptable Data Marts -- A key requirement for successfully deploying OLAP
applications is the ability to respond rapidly to change. Arbor Essbase 4.1
delivers automatic support for structural changes, incremental loads and
interactive user updates to adaptable OLAP data marts. Intelligent
Restructuring is a unique, data driven feature which adapts the structure
of OLAP data marts to reflect activities such as launching or discontinuing
products, adding new customers, or changing organizational structures that
result from shifting business conditions. Intelligent Restructuring enables
Arbor Essbase users to maximize system availability without manual
intervention or reloading information.

Intelligent Restructuring works with Intelligent Recalculation, a feature
introduced in Arbor Essbase version 4.0 that eliminates the need to
recalculate the entire OLAP data mart when only a subset of the data in the
mart changes. The combination of Intelligent Restructuring and Intelligent
Recalculation delivers increased capacity, high availability and reduced
maintenance.

Graphical Query Wizard -- Arbor Essbase 4.1 includes an enhanced graphical
query wizard that makes it easy for users to develop and execute
sophisticated OLAP queries. The query wizard provides graphical screens
that assist users with OLAP-aware multidimensional data navigation,
selection, filtering, ranking and sorting. Users can also save, publish and
share queries.

Arbor Essbase Grid API (application programming interface) -- The Arbor
Essbase Grid API enables developers to rapidly include high-performance,
interactive OLAP capabilities in their custom applications. The Arbor
Essbase Grid API provides all essential OLAP features including drill
up/down/across, pivot, slice & dice and multi-user update in a
language-free environment.

Business Objects is using the Arbor Essbase Grid API to develop integration
between BusinessObjects and Arbor Essbase 4.1 which will provide a range of
OLAP capabilities to Business Objects customers. "The Arbor Essbase Grid
API greatly simplifies developing the link between BusinessObjects, our
leading integrated query, reporting, and OLAP tool, and Arbor Essbase 4.1,"
said Jeff Coombs, group director, worldwide partner alliances at Business
Objects. "By leveraging this rich API to tightly integrate BusinessObjects
and Arbor Essbase, we can deliver a powerful combination of OLAP features
to our customers."

Expanded Web Server Platform Support -- Arbor Essbase 4.1 adds support for
the Arbor Essbase Web Gateway running on the Sun Solaris operating system
in addition to Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0. Arbor Essbase users such
as Sun Microsystems and Bell Canada are using the Arbor Essbase Web Gateway
to cost effectively develop and deploy OLAP applications over the World
Wide Web.

Digital AlphaServer on Microsoft's Windows NT operating system -- Arbor
Essbase 4.1 adds support for the Digital AlphaServer running Microsoft's
Windows NT operating system. Arbor Essbase users can choose from a wide
range of high-performance server platforms -- Intel and Digital
AlphaServer-based Windows NT, Sun Solaris, IBM-AIX, Hewlett-Packard HP-UX,
IBM OS/2 and IBM AS/400.

Dick Fishburn, vice president and CIO of Digital Equipment Corporation
added, "Digital was an early adopter of Arbor Essbase. Digital and Arbor
Software have unique strengths that integrate well with each other. We are
very excited about the Alpha NT release which is providing us with a cycle
time reduction of four to six times, while increasing server capacity
tenfold. With Arbor Essbase on Alpha NT, we are positioned for a major
extension of our use of OLAP, where 30 gigabyte OLAP applications are
commonplace."

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- DCI Database & Client/Server
World, Booth No. 820/Arbor Software, a leading provider of enterprise
software for management reporting, analysis and planning applications,
today announced immediate availability of the Arbor Essbase Financial Data
Mart, an integrated platform for rapidly deploying a wide range of
financial management applications. The Arbor Essbase Financial Data Mart
combines best-of-breed technology, best practices templates and education
and support services.

The Arbor Essbase Financial Data Mart provides robust financial management
capabilities across disparate financial systems by unifying processing,
modeling and management reporting within a single platform. The Arbor
Essbase Financial Data Mart helps customers deliver high quality management
information and eliminate unnecessary or redundant processes. Customers can
utilize the Arbor Essbase Financial Data Mart to rapidly deploy
enterprise-scale financial applications, including consolidation and
budgeting, product profitability, activity-based costing, performance
measurement and Executive Information Systems (EIS).

The need for application-focused data marts was confirmed by META Group,
which estimates that 50-70 percent of data warehouses built in 1997 will be
data marts. "This is a marketplace that is transitioning from technologies
to solutions and as a result, will be package-based just like the
client/server applications market," said Adam Thier, senior research
analyst with the META Group. "Arbor's move to partner with leading
application vendors and package Arbor Essbase into a financial data mart
will allow clients to capitalize on the technology, without facing the risk
of failure in building the surrounding application."

The Arbor Essbase Financial Data Mart includes seven essential components.

-- Arbor Essbase OLAP Server delivers robust calculation and
multidimensional analysis capabilities by providing multi-user read and
write access, large-scale data capacity, robust analytics and modeling
capabilities, flexible data navigation and consistent, rapid response times
for a wide-range of OLAP and data warehousing applications.

-- Arbor Essbase Adjustment Module is a new module announced separately
today which automates routine consolidation processes and provides robust
accounting controls

-- Arbor Essbase Application Manager speeds data mart deployment by
providing graphical tools for data extraction, transformation and model
creation.

-- Crystal Info for Essbase delivers Web-enabled production reporting and
automated report scheduling and distribution capabilities through an
OLAP-aware version of Seagate Software's award-winning Crystal Info. Users
can define key management reports for scheduled delivery in 17 report
formats over corporate networks, intranets and e-mail.

-- Arbor Essbase Spreadsheet Client delivers ad-hoc analysis and update
capabilities through tight integration with Microsoft Excel and Lotus 1-2-3
spreadsheets.

-- Arbor Essbase Currency Conversion Module delivers comprehensive currency
conversion and exchange rate modeling capabilities that fully comply with
Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

-- Best Practices Templates include a documented Best Practices Data Model
and a Standard Management Reporting Package for accelerating the
implementation and application design process.

-- Education and Support Services are included in the Arbor Essbase
Financial Data Mart. Two days of hands-on training and direct telephone
hotline support is available directly from Arbor Software. Hands-on
training is also available from Arbor Authorized Training Centers.

Jim Dorrian, Arbor Software's chairman and CEO added, "By tightly
integrating best-of-breed technology, best practices templates and key
services into the Arbor Essbase Financial Data Mart, we've given our
customers a strategic platform for rapidly deploying a wide range of
financial management applications."

Best Practices Templates

The Arbor Essbase Financial Data Mart incorporates a fully documented Best
Practices Data Model developed with Price Waterhouse to accelerate
application design and implementation. Out-of-the-box, pre-configured
graphical design tools make it easy to tailor applications based on unique
organizational requirements. In addition to simplifying data transfer from
multi-source general ledger systems, the Best Practices Data Model
leverages built-in financial intelligence in the Arbor Essbase Product
family for currency conversions, variance reporting and account types.

"To help global CFOs improve their ability to provide comprehensive and
timely information throughout their organizations, we utilize
enterprise-scale platforms such as the Arbor Essbase Financial Data Mart,"
said Michael J. Schrocok, managing partner for Price Waterhouse's Global
Data Warehousing Practice. "By leveraging the best practices data model
embedded in this new offering, Price Waterhouse can focus on providing
industry and business process expertise and implementation services that
complement their technology, increase shareholder value and deliver
complete solutions for measuring key performance indicators."

A comprehensive Standard Management Reporting Package is also included to
simplify the design and creation of management reports. The package
includes layouts and graphical formats for common financial reports
including consolidated income statements, comparative profit and loss
statements, balance sheets, variance analysis and product reviews. Using
parameter-drive briefing books, companies can quickly deploy and automate
the distribution of line-of-business reports for every geographic or
division manager in the company. These reporting templates leverage the
Best Practices Data Model and can be implemented off-the-shelf or adapted
to a company's specific business model using Crystal Info for Essbase. A
sample of these templates is available at http://www.arborsoft.com .

Arbor Essbase customers like Equity Residential Properties Trust and Tejas
Gas already benefit from Arbor's Financial Data Mart offering. Jack Wilson,
