BEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. --
NUMA-Q 2000 high-end server platform takes DSS to new levels
of scalability and processing power
Sequent Computer Systems Inc. today launched Decision Advantage(TM), a
family of offerings that combines best-of-breed data warehouse and decision
support software with Sequent's consulting services and industry-leading
NUMA-Q 2000(TM) enterprise servers, based on the innovative NUMA
(Non-Uniform Memory Access) architecture.
Sequent's Decision Advantage products and services are based on Sequent's
broad implementation methodology which delivers a process-oriented,
systematic approach to design and build data warehouses and decision
support systems (DSS). From Proof of Concept to complete packages that
minimize risk and costs, Sequent is extending its DSS market leadership by
releasing a series of Decision Advantage offerings throughout 1997.
Each offering solves specific business problems that data warehouses, data
marts and data mining applications address. Sequent's NUMA-Q 2000 offering
gives customers one-stop shopping for open DSS solutions that provide
above-mainframe class computing power.
"Our Decision Advantage offerings bring Sequent's experienced people and
products together with our partners to solve business issues and turn our
customer's valuable information into a competitive weapon," said Steve
Statler, Sequent's Decision Advantage program director. "NUMA-Q 2000 is the
next-generation foundation for our consultants to design and implement
applications on systems that outperform mainframes, massively parallel
processing (MPP) and symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) systems that our
customers can grow with."
Decision Advantage implementations leverage Sequent's experience in
overcoming the challenges of designing and deploying DSS at customer sites
that include Millipore, Source Informatics, Telkom South Africa, Preferred
Direct Insurance and PPP Healthcare. Sequent's NUMA-Q 2000 offers open
systems users new levels of price/performance and scalability, enabling
companies to manage the explosion in number of queries and analytic
processing that challenges today's enterprise-wide data warehouses.
"Sequent's professional services staff helped us move from a blank piece of
paper to a production data warehouse in just three months," said Geoff
Bullen, director of commercial operations, Preferred Direct Insurance.
"There's no telling how long this would have taken us by ourselves or if we
would ever have achieved such clear requirements and good design."
Services Encompass Proven Methodology
Sequent's implementation methodology focuses on the customer's business
problem and the decision-making process using workshops and interviews to
ensure successful development of an operational decision support system
(DSS). The program's goal is to effectively transfer skills to the customer
and to minimize project risk. In addition to standard best practices aimed
at successful project completion, Decision Advantage methodology considers
human factors, employing change management techniques and industrial
psychology. Also, workshops and interviews utilize modern transactional
analysis techniques.
NUMA-Q 2000 is the Ideal DSS Architecture
Sequent's NUMA-Q 2000 systems, generally available since February 1997,
deliver unprecedented levels of scalability and power to enterprise
computing. The underlying NUMA-Q architecture provides unique advantages to
DSS and data warehousing users supporting up to 252 Intel(R) Pentium(TM)
Pro processors in a single system cabinet with I/O bandwidth to easily
handle multi-terabyte decision support queries.
In addition, Sequent's IQ-Link(TM) high-speed interconnect moves data
between four-processor commodity baseboards with negligible latency, for
faster data loading, faster backup and faster queries than the leading MPP
systems. This design enables NUMA-Q 2000 servers to run standard database
and application software as if it were on a single, shared memory SMP
machine.
Sequent Computer Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:SQNT), Beaverton, is uniquely capable
of delivering robust and scalable Data Center Ready open systems solutions
that are guaranteed to perform. Sequent minimizes customers' risk, enabling
implementation of complex business applications that support critical
needs, based on the breakthrough Sequent NUMA-Q architecture, a
comprehensive portfolio of proven migration services and offerings, and an
