Logic Works Introduces Universal Directory

PRINCETON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- Leading provider of
modeling tools announces Universal Directory - a unique tool for
inventorying, searching and publishing meta data for data marts and the
data warehouse.

Logic Works announces Universal Directory(TM), a tool that lets data
warehousing managers easily inventory, search and publish the critical meta
data (i.e., information about data) needed to gain control of the widely
dispersed information sources used to build a data warehouse. Logic Works
Universal Directory expedites the entire data warehouse development
process.

"Bell Atlantic is using Logic Works Universal Directory to capture valuable
information assets from existing legacy systems," said Ron Harris, Manager,
Systems Architecture and Information Engineering, Bell Atlantic. "Once this
information is inventoried it will be mapped against our data warehouse
models developed using Logic Works ERwin(R). This provides Bell Atlantic
with the capability of presenting our users with a visual picture of our
data warehouse."

"We have faced a major challenge in collecting, cataloging and storing our
meta data for our data warehousing environment. We were able to use
Universal Directory to centralize and integrate our meta data for browsing
and publishing information about our data warehouse assets," said Rose
Gilligan, Manager, Information Technology, ADP Dealer Services.

"The single most valuable source of meta data is the design of the database
and data warehouse, a market in which we are an established leader,"
explained Ben Cohen, President and CEO of Logic Works. "Universal Directory
is a natural extension of our core competency and brings the ease of use,
power and value we are known for to the Data Warehouse market. It was
designed for broad business deployment, a kind of Yahoo! for the warehouse,
allowing business users to find and understand the information assets they
need to run their business."

Importance of Meta Data

"The data warehouse makes information assets of an organization available
to the enterprise. Understanding these assets is the key to building and
deploying an effective data warehouse," stated John Ladley, program
director, META Group. "Data management tools like Logic Works Universal
Directory are essential ingredients of successful data warehouse
development."

"Our approach to meta data management is unique," explained Flint Lane,
Director of Data Warehouse Product Development for Logic Works. "We
realized from the start that for Universal Directory to succeed it needed
to be easy enough to use so that it would be deployed to the business user
as well as the warehouse designer, open enough to encapsulate the redundant
meta data stored in individual warehouse technologies, and powerful enough
to meet the diverse needs of different organizations."

Meta data is at the center of building effective data marts and data
warehouses. The management of this meta data is the determining factor as
to whether a data warehouse has value or is just another database with vast
amounts of data. Meta data plays a vital role in each step of building the
data warehouse or data mart: inventorying source data; designing the
warehouse; mapping source-to-target data; populating the warehouse;
analyzing warehouse data and evolving the warehouse data.

Without Universal Directory providing an inventory of meta data, potential
data warehouse sources may be missed, inappropriate sources may be chosen
and poor design decisions may be made. Time resources will be spent on
identifying and locating supporting documentation rather than developing
and designing the data warehouse.

Universal Directory: A Meta Data Information Directory

Universal Directory benefits the entire data warehousing community by
bringing order to "informational chaos." It gives business users an
information directory from which to browse and publish warehouse data that
may exist in one or more data marts. Universal Directory's information
directory contains descriptive data that pertains to an information asset's
business origin, physical location and characteristics.

For the data warehousing manager, Universal Directory provides the
organization needed to construct an effective data warehouse and identify
informational assets. Universal Directory identifies meta data, based on
any search criteria, and clearly defines the data source, no matter where
it may reside, internally or externally.

With an easy-to-use GUI that mirrors a browser environment, Universal
Directory consists of two major components: the Universal Explorer and the
Directory Administrator. The Universal Explorer provides business users
with a set of tools that facilitate the browsing and "packaging" of
informational assets contained within the data warehouse. The Directory
Administrator helps data warehousing managers acquire, maintain, extend,
use, publish, analyze and secure data warehouse meta data.

Both Administrator and Explorer use a powerful search engine that
transcends conventional search indices by providing an easy-to-use yet
highly intelligent search component. This allows users to intuitively move
through information, dramatically increases the accuracy of searches,
enables the automatic personalization and delivery of meta data and
provides the ability to customize searches to meet specific data
warehousing needs.

Universal Directory inventories over 40 different built-in
warehouse-related objects, including both structured and unstructured meta
data, captured from various sources such as ERwin models and COBOL FD
descriptions. Universal Directory is uniquely extensible, allowing for
customer-defined objects. This extensibility provides universal support for
structured and unstructured informational assets, that can be found in
documents, legacy systems, CASE tools, Inter/Intranet and other formats.

Combining powerful tools

Universal Directory can be used with a combination of information
management tools to help build and maintain data warehouses. For example,
using the Complete-Compare feature of Logic Works ERwin database design
tool, the model management function of Logic Works ModelMart(TM) and
Universal Directory's search and visual analysis features, warehouse data
sources can easily be selected. Warehouse data sourcing and the Logic Works
ERwin warehouse models can also be stored in Universal Directory for a
complete inventory of warehouse meta data.

System requirements

Universal Directory Explorer and Universal Directory Administrator require
an Intel 486 or Pentium running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, with a
minimum 16 MB of RAM and 10 MB of hard disk space. Universal Directory Data
Server requires a Pentium or better running Windows NT 4.0, with a minimum
32 MB of RAM and 15 MB of hard disk space. It is compatible with MS SQL
Server (6.5 or later), Sybase SQL Server (4.x, 10, or 11), and Oracle (7.3
or later).

Pricing and availability

Logic Works Universal Directory is currently shipping. The list price for
Universal Directory is $30,000, which includes 10 concurrent licenses. A
single concurrent license can support between 5 and 10 business users.
Additional concurrent licenses can be purchased to scale this solution for
enterprise deployment.
