PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- Brio Technology,
Inc., the enterprise business intelligence company, today announced Brio
Enterprise 5.0, a major upgrade which includes over 50 new "power"
features.
The new release is available immediately for all Brio Enterprise products
across all supported platforms and operating systems.
With the theme "Unleashing the Power of Data," Brio has significantly
scaled up the performance and functionality of its Brio Enterprise family
of products. Some of the key new features include: support for UNIX
servers, the addition of OLAP data sources such as Arbor Essbase, a
programmable user interface for building custom front-ends to Brio
Enterprise applications, enhanced analytic tools in the distributed OLAP
engine, better metadata management and integration tools, and many more.
"Organizations want to unleash the power of the data that is contained in
their data warehouses and data marts," said Katherine Glassey, Brio's
executive vice president of products and chief technology officer. "The
Brio Enterprise 5.0 suite significantly improves our ability to meet the
needs of the key business intelligence users within an organization:
Information Producers, who need powerful, client/server-based query,
analysis, reporting and management tools; and Information consumers, who
need user-centric products which incorporate integrated OLAP and reporting
capabilities and operate within standard web browsers."
"With Brio Enterprise 5.0, Brio has emerged as a leader in the trend
towards three-tiered business intelligence solutions that scale across the
enterprise," stated Dave Folger, senior analyst for the Meta Group. "Brio
Enterprise's multi-tier architecture allows for optimized deployment across
both client/server and Web-based environments, with sophisticated metadata
management capabilities that reduce the impact on IT."
Key Features of Brio Enterprise 5.0
All products in the Brio Enterprise family, which consists of BrioQuery(TM)
Designer, BrioQuery(TM) Explorer, BrioQuery(TM) Navigator,
BrioQuery.Server(TM), Brio.Insight(TM), and Brio.Quickview(TM) have been
significantly enhanced. Major new features include:
EIS Tab -- The EIS tab provides a drag-and-drop development tool for
building graphical interfaces to Brio Enterprise applications that can
retrieve data, run reports, and launch other applications with a single
mouse click.
Heterogeneous Joins -- Enables the integration of data from different
sources. For example, this feature allows a user to quickly and easily
compare historical information stored in a data mart with forecast
information stored in a spreadsheet or local database. Heterogeneous Joins
increases productivity by reducing the number of steps required to compare
and analyze data from different sources.
Repository Hub -- Provides transparent access to data regardless of where
it resides throughout the enterprise. It enables the Brio Enterprise
Repository to act as a centralized hub, managing access across multiple
databases, servers, and networks through a single, centralized facility.
The Repository Hub gives you faster, easier access to information, wherever
it may be stored.
Advanced Analysis functions -- Now you can perform advanced calculations
within Brio's PivotSheet OLAP engine. Computed Facts allows you to quickly
do sophisticated analysis (forecasting, conversions, and custom functions)
specific to your business. The addition of If..Then..Else logic allows for
the inclusion of business rules in your calculation processes.
New Chart Types -- Over a dozen new charting functions, including dual Y
axis, Pareto charts, line-bar combo charts, and more have been added to the
new release. And the new Chart This/Pivot This function Instantly create
charts and Pivot reports in one instantaneous step.
Custom Hierarchies -- This new feature allows the merging of dimension
labels to create new customized summary categories beyond what is defined
in the database or data warehouse metadata.
For BrioQuery.Server(TM) 5.0:
UNIX Support -- BrioQuery.Server(TM) is now available on Solaris for SPARC
and Solaris for Intel, in addition to it's existing support for WindowsNT
servers.
Event-Driven Scheduling -- Now BrioQuery.Server(TM) activities can be
triggered by external events, as well as through scheduled and batch-style
processing. For example, a series of reporting and analysis activities
could be driven by the completion of an update to a data warehouse or data
mart server.
Report Bursting -- Allows one job to be processed multiple times with
different results for each iterative run. The results can be managed and
distributed according to different rules and criteria.
"This release represents an effort that very few software companies have
accomplished," said Yorgen Edholm, founder and CEO of Brio. "We have
released a major "power" upgrade to six products, BrioQuery(TM) Designer,
Explorer and Navigator, BrioQuery.Server(TM), BrioQuickview(TM) and
Brio.Insight(TM) on five different platforms, including 32-bit versions for
Windows95 and WindowsNT, Windows 3.1, Macintosh, and UNIX and it is already
shipping to customers."

Leaders; Brio Enterprise 5.0 Supports Industry Leaders Including/ Arbor,
Hewlett-Packard, Informatica, Red Brick and Sun Microsystems

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- Brio Technology,
the enterprise business intelligence company, today announced that Brio
Enterprise 5.0, the first family of products for delivering business
intelligence throughout the enterprise, is optimized to support the
industry's leaders in decision support including Arbor, Hewlett Packard,
Informatica, Red Brick and Sun Microsystems.
"Brio has always provided the most highly optimized integration with
best-of-breed data warehouse products and technology," said Chris Grejtak,
Brio Technology's executive vice president of marketing. "With Brio
Enterprise 5.0, we have worked closely with our partners to further ensure
that our customers have the ability to deploy an enterprise-wide data
warehouse solution which is optimized for both client/server and web-based
delivery."
Each company is looking towards Brio Enterprise to empower its users and
provide powerful desktop analysis and insight into the data. The companies
and their specific relationship with Brio Enterprise 5.0 includes:
Arbor Software -- The support of Arbor Software's Arbor Essbase extends
Brio Enterprise 5.0's query capabilities beyond traditional data to include
multi-dimensional sources. Brio Enterprise delivers a comprehensive query,
distributed OLAP, and reporting solution that can be easily deployed on PC
or web clients across the enterprise. This solution fully complements the
speed and power of the Arbor Essbase engine on the server platform. The
Brio Enterprise solution extends the value of Arbor Essbase data by
providing portable desktop analysis, time and event-based scheduling of
reports, and an intuitive, interactive web interface for multi-dimensional
data.
"We are excited to see Brio is delivering OLAP server support by tightly
integrating BrioQuery.Server with Arbor Essbase," stated Kirk Cruikshank,
vice president of marketing for Arbor Software. "The integration enables
users to take full advantage of the high-performance, server-based
analytics in Arbor Essbase with Brio Enterprise's client/server and Web
environment."
Hewlett Packard -- Joint development efforts by Brio Technology and Hewlett
Packard have resulted in the seamless integration of the Brio Enterprise
product line and Hewlett Packard Intelligent Warehouse (HPIW). With this
release, both client and server side products in the Brio Enterprise family
operate transparently with HPIW while supporting and enhancing IW features.
Brio Enterprise is fully certified for HP's IWODBC interface on both the
Macintosh and PC platforms, allowing a simple setup and connection process.
BrioQuery is also available on HP-UX, thus enabling a consistent front end
for heterogeneous environments.
"Brio Enterprise unleashes the power of HPIW by providing an integrated
view of IW metadata," said Jim Murphy, HP's OpenWarehouse Marketing
Manager. "By implementing IW support in BrioQuery.Server, Brio Enterprise
now provides a more scaleable and distributed environment to leverage IW
implementations across the enterprise."
Informatica -- Support of Informatica's new Metadata Exchange (MX)
Architecture showcases Brio Enterprise 5.0's ability to dynamically link
end users to corporate metadata using Brio's Open Metadata Interpreter
(OMI). The BrioQuery OMI acts as a dynamic interpreter of corporate
metadata, instantly distributing updated information to end users without
IT intervention. This unique capability dramatically reduces support and
infrastructure costs, while increasing user confidence in the data
warehouse information required to business-critical decisions.
"The integration of desktop tools with enterprise metadata has been a key
implementation issue facing this industry for years," said Paul Albright,
vice president of marketing, Informatica. "By leveraging Informatica's (MX)
architecture, Brio Enterprise 5.0 delivers significant new functionality
today. Now our customers can benefit from dynamic views of enterprise-wide
metadata, while implementation times have been slashed to a fraction of
what they were when metadata integration was done via handwritten code."
Red Brick -- With Brio Enterprise 5.0, Brio is continuing its long-term
support for unique Red Brick functions, including support for new
enhancements in Red Brick Warehouse Version 5. BrioQuery fully supports Red
Brick's RISQL extensions to SQL, including functions (ntile, movingsum,
movingavg, and others), the When Clause, and left, right, and full outer
joins. Red Brick's new system table structure is supported, making for easy
model building, including automatic detection of table relationships.
"As a PaVER Gold Partner, Brio has a long history of cooperative efforts
with Red Brick, and the two companies have a shared commitment to
excellence," said Mark Olson, director of corporate marketing at Red Brick.
"At Red Brick, performance is everything. Brio Enterprise 5.0 will provide
our joint customers access to Red Brick's specialized data warehouse RDBMS
functionality so more users can make better decisions faster."
Sun Microsystems -- Brio Enterprise's BrioQuery.Server extends support to
Sun's Solaris servers, including Solaris for SPARC and Solaris for Intel
platforms. By making the Brio Enterprise product line available on Sun
platforms, Brio Technology is providing its customers with the means to
deliver comprehensive data warehouse solutions that leverage the
performance, reliability, and scalability of Solaris on client, server and
web.
"The support of Solaris will greatly enhance Brio's ability to address the
scalability issues associated with moving into the enterprise space,"
stated Rod Tansimore, group manager of the decision warehouse program, Sun
Microsystems Computer Company. "Brio Enterprise's distributed architecture
allows customers using the BrioQuery.Server to take full advantage of the
performance and scalability gained when using Sun Ultra Enterprise
servers."
