New Sybase Tools To Help Streamline Data Warehousing
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: Monday, April 7, 1997
Source: PC Week
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
PC Week via Individual Inc. : Sybase Inc. will unveil this week a bundle of
tools designed to make it easier to move information into a data warehouse,
along with an upgrade of its SybaseIQ database that speeds query
processing.
The data warehousing bundle, called WarehouseNow, includes several current
products and two new ones: Distribution Agent for MVS, for moving mainframe
data to a data warehouse; and Distribution Director, a console for managing
loading and replication of warehouse data, said sources close to the
Emeryville, Calif., company.
Distribution Agent is aimed at addressing the need for tools that quickly
move large amounts of mainframe data into data marts or warehouses. By
giving users a central point for coordinating loads and replication,
Distribution Director helps automate and manage data mart and warehouse
updates.
SybaseIQ 11.2, the database upgrade due to ship this month, features a new
memory manager designed to reduce RAM usage, new online parallel backup and
restore capabilities, and enhanced security, sources said. A future release
of IQ will be integrated with Sybase's Replication Server.
At its annual users' group meeting in Orlando, Fla., this week, Sybase
also will articulate its intentions to give its three main database
servers-- Sybase SQL Server, SybaseIQ and SQL Anywhere--common
administration tools, APIs and stored procedure language, officials said.
By doing this, Sybase will try to increase the viability of its servers for
interoperating in a distributed corporate architecture. Sybase also will
provide a way to support complex data via "snap-in" modules.
The common API and administration layer, called the Sybase Advanced
Framework to Enable Information Technology Architecture, doesn't mean
unifying the databases, however.
"A database server that does everything is not our philosophy," said
Mitchell Kertzman, Sybase's CEO and president. "Databases optimized for
particular applications is the right approach."
The moves come at a critical time for Sybase, which has slipped to the
third spot in market share as customers see Informix Software Inc. and
Oracle Corp. as more stable and leading-edge.
"Sybase has lost ground to Oracle, Microsoft [Corp.], Informix and IBM in
object relational extensions," said Jeff Devlin, director of database
administration and technical services at the Equitable Life Assurance
Society, in New York.
Distribution Agent for MVS can populate 32 target databases at once.
Distribution Director lets database administrators manage staged
replication to IQ and coordinate bulk data loading. A new GUI has wizards
for defining and executing jobs.
In addition to the two new applications, WarehouseNow includes several
Sybase and third-party products bundled together for easier installation
and lower costs.
Users will get a warehouse design tool with S-Designor's WarehouseArchitect
module, due in June. Replication, a critical area for synchronizing sources
and targets, is provided with the Replication Server, while
EnterpriseConnect middleware handles heterogeneous database connections.

Sybase, Inc. Ships Beta Release of Adaptive Server Sybase's Adaptive
Component Architecture Adds Next-Generation DBMS to Target OLTP, Data
Warehouse and Internet Applications
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: Tuesday, April 8, 1997
Source: PR Newswire
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
ORLANDO, Fla., April 7 /PRNewswire/ via Individual Inc. -- Sybase, Inc.
(Nasdaq: SYBS) today announced the beta release of Sybase(R) Adaptive
Server(TM) 11.5, a key component of ImpactNow(TM), Sybase's Adaptive
Component Architecture(TM), Sybase Adaptive Server 11.5, previously
code-named Gryphon and the successor to Sybase(R) SQL Server(TM) 11, is
designed to provide customers with predictable performance in business
environments addressing mixed OLTP and DSS workloads. Sybase Adaptive
Server 11.5 delivers performance and scalability in these environments
across a wide range of data sources and data types, through its component
integration layer. Sybase's Adaptive Component Architecture embraces
openness and adherence to standards and delivers rapid application
development and flexible deployment across all tiers of computing. The
announcement was made at the International Sybase User Group Conference
being held here this week.
"Sybase Adaptive Server provides customers with the solutions they need now
to manage a broad variety of content across distributed information systems
and the Internet," said Terry Stepien, vice president of database marketing
for Sybase, Inc. "The predictable performance and inherent scalability of
Sybase Adaptive Server 11.5, combined with support for key specialized data
types, including geo-spatial data, time series data, multi- media, image
content and text, will enable optimized data stores that meet specific
business applications requirements."
Delivery of Predictable Performance for Unpredictable Environments
Organizations are confronted with the need to deliver predictable system
performance in environments where data and user volume are unpredictable.
With the advent of more powerful SMP systems, customers increasingly
require the capacity to support mixed workload environments. Guaranteeing
predictable response time in a 7x24-hour OLTP environment with occasional
batch and reporting operations is a function of managing content on scarce
shared resources. Sybase(R) SQL Server(TM) 11 was the first relational DBMS
to support logical memory partitioning with its Logical Memory Manager and
dynamic block I/O functionality. Sybase, Inc.'s Adaptive Server continues
this direction with its Logical Process Manager (LPM), allowing DBAs the
ability to deliver the right system resources to the right applications at
the right time. LPM partitions CPUs in an SMP environment to prioritize
groups of activities or users. Sybase Adaptive Server 11.5 delivers this
core functionality to optimize predictability in a range of transactional
systems from Internet business applications to consolidated data
warehouses.
Specialty Data Type Components
Sybase, Inc. believes that the Adaptive Server 11.5 is the first relational
DBMS to integrate a flexible component integration layer into its kernel,
allowing support of application-transparent integration of data from a
distributed data server. Data integration occurs between relational and
specialty data type (SDT) components and various relational and
non-relational data sources. Sybase Adaptive Server 11.5 supports the key
specialty data types, including geo-spatial data, time series data and
multi-media.
Today, Sybase, Inc. and Virage, Inc., a leading supplier for Visual
Information Retrieval (VIR), announced a partnership to provide a specialty
data type store for image content management. This builds on the
partnerships announced in October 1996 with Vision International, FAME
Information Services, Inc., Network Imaging Corporation (NIC) and Verity,
Inc.
Highlights of Sybase Adaptive Server
Performance
Parallel Operations: Sybase Adaptive Server supports parallel operations on
large-scale data volumes. Internal benchmark results indicate that, in some
cases, Adaptive Server increases performance for complex DSS transactions
by a factor of 10 to 15 times over Sybase SQL Server 11. Utility operations
such as loads and indexing times have, in some cases, decreased four to
five times using parallel I/O operations.
Recovery: Sybase Adaptive Server provides high-performance on-line/back- up
recovery with Back-Up Server technology. Sybase Adaptive Server 11.5
leverages parallel I/O to increase recovery speed four-fold. Recovery
granularity has also been increased, reducing the size and duration of the
recovery process. Additionally, Sybase Adaptive Server 11.5 supports all
major fail-over packages.
Database Resident Message Queues: Through Sybase, Inc.'s dbQ(TM) software,
the Adaptive Server supports database resident message queues for the
delivery of high-integrity, distributed asynchronous transaction
processing. Applications are partitioned to model real-world processes more
effectively, executing asynchronously in terms of time and place. No longer
will users have to question the integrity of the intra-application
messaging connected to a "long transaction," as these are stored in the
same database as the transaction associated with them.
Security
The evolution of application architectures from mainframe to client/server
to 3-tier demands the need to secure access to, and processing of, data for
these applications. Sybase Adaptive Server delivers significant
functionality to the core server in order to address the security issues of
client/server architectures and 3-tier Internet-based business
applications. Additionally, Sybase Adaptive Server will support
authorization schemas optimized for 3-tier architecture and will provide
native support for a series of external security services including DCE,
Kerberos and Security Socket Layer.
